After unlocking the car this morning, my wife got into the passenger seat of my MY11 GS and - as I was walking around the car to get in the car radio started to play. The key was in my hand - not docked in the car.

I had previously been under the impression that the radio (and other things) needed the key to be docked. Or did I miss something in the manual? The map is not the territory

Radio works without key being in.

Will work for ten to fifteen minutes before you get the low battery warning and it turns off.
