good

Get highest spec model you can afford, and ideally automatic gears (better than manual by far in this vehicle). GS was considered best value for money at the time, then XS, SE & HSE. I opted for SE with full leather as it had all extras I wanted.

Surprised to find how much I liked heated front seats; heated front screen definitely worth it too. Built-in LR sat nab is large and looks good, but not exactly intuitive to use the very wide range of features, and maps get out of date.

Think you'll find most aspects of this vehicle far superior to Freelander 1; though some do miss the tailgate window that opens.

My 07 FL2 is the best & most comfortable car I have ever owned, by some margin! Life is not a dress rehearsal!

United Kingdom 2010 Freelander 2 TD4_e GS Manual Santorini Black

I got a 2010 GS recently but in a financially ideal world would have got an XS or HSE - I miss the sunroof and heated / leather seats from previous cars. Wasn't a deal-breaker though. The LR satnav looks cool but is absolute cobblers compared to even a free app on your iPhone. In that respect, a GS with a Tomtom Start 60 'filling' the empty cubby hole is a much better bet.

With the money I had, I could have got a 2010 GS or a 2007/8 HSE. I preferred the lower mileage, younger option to the older, blinged-up one. Hmmm..

Have to disagree about automatic being the preferred option. I know the caravanners like the auto box but I prefer to drive the car myself Laughing

autos

Just to clarify re autos:-

Most FL2 owners on here have preferred auto option, as did I after trying both.

Auto is more reliable; much better in traffic and on long trips, better performing off-road too.

You DO still have to drive the car, only gear changes are automatic, plus you can use command shift you feel like moving the gears yourself for a bit. Test drive and see. Life is not a dress rehearsal!

Really? An un-scientific flick through members' avatars looks like more of a 50/50 divide. Maybe there's a survey somewhere that sheds more light..

That's interesting - any stats on that? Auto is certainly less effort in traffic, if that's what you mean. Manual has got to be better on mpg though? I've only done a little off-roading, mostly in Discos, and much preferred the flexibility and choices of a manual. Maybe the FL is different.

Manual versions are a fair bit cheaper and generally harder to sell as there's not much demand for them. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
Evoque SD4 Dynamic Lux Auto
Present: Audi A3 S Line.

England 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 XS Auto Indus Silver

Only my opinion but, my first FL2 was a XS TD4 manual, fantastic car, never let me down and a pleasure to drive.
My second FL2 was a XS SD4 Auto, fantastic car, never let me down and with a fantastic feeling every time I drove it! The auto box just works very well with the car and the extra grunt from the SD4 well worth having.

I have bought at auctions in the past, with some success. However, a Freelander 2 is a complex car and I would guess the best ones are found on a dealer forecourt. If a car is at auction it is either because it is not good enough/needs too much work for a dealer or the seller is desperate to get rid, for whatever reason. Auctions are a lottery and the odds can be against you.
Re your previous questions - my experience is similar to wizking - the manual served me well, a delight to drive and was completely reliable. Over 100k when I sold it - and still on the original clutch. My present auto is also a delight to drive but more relaxing to tow with. Just fewer mpg than the manual. Re the 190 - no problems any more than the 160/150 - although the 190 is only in the later SD4 which is out of your price range.

Decide for yourself whether auto or manual! There are plenty of us who prefer the manual, and as an added bonus you get around 5-6mpg more from it. (Many FL2 drivers are either caravanners or, erm, getting on a bit and getting lazy!)

I'd tend to go for low mileage over spec. For me XS is the best spec (HSE is too much extra for too little that I actually want), but given the choice of a low mileage GS or a high mileage XS I'd go for the GS.

I've not bought from auction, but deals can be found at non-LR garages - my car came from a Renault/Nissan dealer with their own 12-month warranty and a price significantly below that of a LR dealer.

On an 07/08 plate the engine will be a 160 TD4 - the 150/190 came much later. There's also a 6-cylinder petrol which is apparently a nice drive but expensive to run so perhaps best avoided. There aren't many of them around anyway.

Whatever you go for they're great cars and I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

I didn't find much if, if any, difference in prices - at least at LR dealers, but it was little harder to find a good manual - autos are deffo more common on the forecourt.
As soon as one starts discussing economy on this forum some others start screaming "what do you expect? You should have bought a Prius!", but the lower emissions, road tax and mpg would lead me to a manual every time, unless I was desperate for the auto driving experience. Or a caravanner.
I know the much newer autos are better on all the above but I couldn't afford one of those Big Cry
