Get highest spec model you can afford, and ideally automatic gears (better than manual by far in this vehicle). GS was considered best value for money at the time, then XS, SE & HSE. I opted for SE with full leather as it had all extras I wanted.

I got a 2010 GS recently but in a financially ideal world would have got an XS or HSE - I miss the sunroof and heated / leather seats from previous cars. Wasn't a deal-breaker though. The LR satnav looks cool but is absolute cobblers compared to even a free app on your iPhone. In that respect, a GS with a Tomtom Start 60 'filling' the empty cubby hole is a much better bet.

Really? An un-scientific flick through members' avatars looks like more of a 50/50 divide. Maybe there's a survey somewhere that sheds more light..
That's interesting - any stats on that? Auto is certainly less effort in traffic, if that's what you mean. Manual has got to be better on mpg though? I've only done a little off-roading, mostly in Discos, and much preferred the flexibility and choices of a manual. Maybe the FL is different.

Manual versions are a fair bit cheaper and generally harder to sell as there's not much demand for them. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Only my opinion but, my first FL2 was a XS TD4 manual, fantastic car, never let me down and a pleasure to drive.

I have bought at auctions in the past, with some success. However, a Freelander 2 is a complex car and I would guess the best ones are found on a dealer forecourt. If a car is at auction it is either because it is not good enough/needs too much work for a dealer or the seller is desperate to get rid, for whatever reason. Auctions are a lottery and the odds can be against you.

Decide for yourself whether auto or manual! There are plenty of us who prefer the manual, and as an added bonus you get around 5-6mpg more from it. (Many FL2 drivers are either caravanners or, erm, getting on a bit and getting lazy!)

I didn't find much if, if any, difference in prices - at least at LR dealers, but it was little harder to find a good manual - autos are deffo more common on the forecourt. As soon as one starts discussing economy on this forum some others start screaming "what do you expect? You should have bought a Prius!", but the lower emissions, road tax and mpg would lead me to a manual every time, unless I was desperate for the auto driving experience. Or a caravanner. I know the much newer autos are better on all the above but I couldn't afford one of those |
