2013 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Stornoway Grey

The carrier is specific for the disk - to cater for different diameters but the FL2 uses the same caliper for all front brakes both I6 and TD4/SD4.

When I converted to I6 disks, I bought new carriers (ebay) and used my old calipers.

Thanks for persisting with me, Jules!

If this is so, and if the same 316mm discs can be used on both FL2 and S80, then an S80 caliper and carrier that's compatible with a 316mm disc should fit fine on the FL2 with a 316mm disc?

Cheers!

Hoping that the OP or someone who has done this might be able to advise.

Have you thought about searching on-line scrappers for the carrier LR001014 - its not handed ie fits both sides. Its not something that wears out .

Unfortunately new carriers seem to be about £100 each side these days (much more than when I bought mine) Jules

If you did buy second-hand carriers you could easily put on new slider pins - they come in a kit

Why do you want to use Volvo calipers when YOUR original FL2 calipers are the OEM for all FL2 front brakes ? Jules

is it just me?or is this brake mod just too much hassle and waste of time ,unless of course, you are thinking of racing your freelander at the Nuremburg race track, bearing in mind some guy was paid in excess of £100000, to design freelander brakes. Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

I changed mine simply because i needed new front disks and pads and hoses anyway and I saw the I6 carriers at a good price on ebay - several years ago now mind. Jules

I dont think anyone at JLR designed the brakes for the FL2 they were just taken from the Ford/Volvo parts bin and were deemed to work OK. Laughing

But I get what you mean. Jules

But some people enjoy "modding" their cars with better components eg lights etc or just for fun. Jules

In fact, I wonder why the I6 has bigger disks on the front than the other FL2s - it doesnt go much faster than the SD4 and actually weighs a bit less.

I think it was for brand model demarcation. Jules

Yes, there's certainly a bit of attraction for me in modding the car and personalising it. As a petrolhead, I like to be able to "enjoy" a car's potential as much as possible, when occasion permits.

The brakes - including calipers - all need replacing anyway, so I was trying to see if there was a sensible upgrade that wouldn't make much difference costwise.

The petrol version was given bigger discs, so it makes sense to upgrade to those - and that will require changing the caliper carriers one way or the other.

Since i need to change the calipers anyway, the Volvo versions are apparently a compatible upgrade (size-wise at least), and aren't going to cost me any more than OEM ones, so why not?

I have remapped the engine and upgraded the air filter and turbo hoses, so in theory mine's at SD4 + spec, so better brakes seems not uncalled for... Smile

Ok, another question, this time re the rears...

Do the thicker/vented discs of the 3.2 petrol fit on the 2.2 diesel? Obviously they'll need the matching carriers, but I presume no problem with compatibility?

Sorry dont know.

The rear brakes with EPB are incompatible with the earlier cars with cable parking brake and I dont know what sort of rear brakes the I6 had. Jules
