I am fully aware of the pro's and con's of a remap Vs tuning box so please lets not start an argument on that subject !

I am just curious as to what remap OR tuning box people have used and noticed a good improvement in MPG ?

I have a 2012 SD4 and knew that the MPG wasn't great (compared to my last Mitsubishi ASX) but MPG wasn't a factor in getting the Freelander.
However if there are any good remaps or tuning boxes that people have had good results with then i would look into it.

I love the SD4 and find the engine fun and would not want to lose any power / torque to gain more MPG.
Who has had good improvements ?

I am not sure either a re-map or a tuning box will have any effect on mpg on an auto unless the change points on the auto box can also be changed. I had a tuning box on my Santa Fe but that as a manual, the gain was by having greater torque at lower rpm enabling a higher gear to be held at lower speeds and better acceleration without using higher rpm. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

A re-map by a decent tuner will increase MPG if driven normally. Of course if you drive it hard, you will use more fuel than standard which I am sure you know.

A re-map will make things more efficient and combined with decent quality fuel will help on the MPG front.

Tuning box's will help in a similar way and are proven to help MPG under certain conditions, but as the majority of the time we rely on the trip computer to tell us our mpg, trip computers can be inaccurate when the car is fitted with a tuning box.

I have sent my Bluefin module that I ran on my old FL2 for over 6 years to Superchips to be re-programmed to read my SD4 file.

Edit: used search and i found it. I dont have any tools to do cff updates but is it possible to ask dealer?

There are two ways to look at this.

1) Re-mapping any car will never have any issue on gearbox's, clutches, drivetrain etc. 'IF' the car is driven with respect and correctly. Every car of mine has been re-mapped (This one excluded, but it soon will be) and I have never had an issue.

2) Re-mapping any car will cause all sorts of issues if you hammer it all the time and treat it with no respect. But this can also apply to standard cars.

I know of a guy within our circle of friends who had an FL2 and went through tyres, clutches, brakes, 2 diff's like they were going out of fashion.

But his method of driving was hammer down everywhere he went. He was an animal in the car, and couldn't understand why the poor thing gave him problems.

I asked a similar question as the OP a while ago and got all sorts of stuff about how any more power will overload the clutch and gearbox.
So my question to Mikey is what tune did you put on your TD4e? And has it affected anything in the drive train?

Just a normal tune from Alive Tuning, around 185bhp. Could have got more power if I asked for it, but it's the wife's car, so not much point. It will likely receive a decat and big intercooler in the summer, which will see it close to 200bhp, which is more than enough for her

We got the car at 126k, it was remapped the same week. In 4k miles, there have been no adverse effects on the drivetrain, or clutch/DMF. And it's much more fun to drive now

Just answering his question, not comparing a remapped 160 to a standard 190

I think he was asking about improvements to the SD4 not Freelys in general, as I said before with a manual it is usual to get improvements, an auto is more questionable. The tuning box depending on its software (assuming it has some ) the OBC can read optimistically regarding mpg. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

The autoboxes don't work on basic fixed change points and will adapt to the circumstances, so the extra torque will have an effect whether auto or manual, though the manual may benefit a little more.  Freelander 2 2007 TD4 Manual HSE Tambora Flame
