Clutch failure on 62 plate FL2 @90k miles

Had a call from a friend last night to say he was stranded after clutch started smoking going up steep hill locally - he made it to top and tried to get home but ground to a halt a few miles later Sad

Managed to tow him home with the PHEV so that's another tick off my list Mr. Green

He's getting local garage to recover it but I'm surprised this failed already and wonder if this is common and if anyone managed goodwill towards cost Confused Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Still hoping for a S2 one day!

When something like that happens it's always worth parking up and, with the engine off, pump the cluch a good few times letting it come up quickly but not too hard. Many FL2 clutch problems seem to be with the adjustment mechanism and actuation rather than the clutch itself and this trick has worked for me in the past.

Shocked

I tried hard for years to educate Phil the Merc Lover on the merits of LRs but in the end I realised I was flogging a dead horse and gave up Confused

I have also given up on LRs (and Caravans - for the time being at least) but have no intentions of spoiling others enjoyment - I can still remember the good times before it went downhill Sad

I started this thread to help a friend not antagonise anyone Thumbs Up Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Really Sad

Yep really... manual clutches/flywheels/slave cylinders are not a good point on the FL2 and at 90k hes done better than some. Mine went on 5 year old 07 plate with 95k and a 6 year old 08 plate with 66k. Mostly motorway driving so not me riding the clutch before I get slated Very Happy

@rnlisg.... mine cost me around £800 at an indy for a new clutch, flywheel and slave cynlinder

We managed to get to 184k KM on ours before having all 3 changed when we were last in UK.
It was suggested by the mechanic that I may be Scottish to get so much value out of the clutch, informed him that as a Yorkshire man we have a need for good value/tightness in common with the Scots Laughing

That's what I thought when I saw this thread. Come on, 90k from a clutch on a 4WD ain't bad! Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
Evoque SD4 Dynamic Lux Auto
Present: Audi A3 S Line.
