Roofing problem Ridge or Hip tile

In the recent gales we lost some Ridge tiles.
House is now 14 years old. When a roofer came to fit new tiles he explained that hip tiles have been used which are not quite a semi circle and don't fit the roof properly and cannot sit on a proper bed of mortar.

I'm unable to find the technical requirements for whether hip or ridge tiles should be used. The sum of money to have all the tiles replaced is considerable and wondered whether I'm being taken for a ride although I didn't get the impression that I was !

We had a main sewer collapsed under the pavement due to plastic pipe being used when the pipe was 20 ft below the ground ! When the house was 6 years old and the builders refused to get involved and the repair was 16k and a massive battle with the insurance company to cough up !
We had a gas leak the day we moved in when the house was brand new as a 22mm pipe hadn't been soldered !
We had a person fall through a manhole cover on the drive due to a pedestrian cover used on a driveway and the car had cracked it as it was the wrong cover !

Just beginning to wonder who passes all these things off ! The NHBC wasn't worth the paper it was written on Jaguar x-type sport gone

It is "Building Control" at the local council who inspect and pass it. The builder will have to get an inspection done at defined stages and shouldn't proceed until it has been passed. At the end there should be a completion certificate.

You should be able to check with your council to see what was passed and when if it is a fairly recent build.

However, builders know how to get things passed. We have a newish house and the plaster has cracked on the ceiling. It appears that they have just plastered over a steel beam so of course it won't stick! However, it doesn't meet building regs for 30 min fire protection but if it was plastered before inspection no one can tell.

A drain cover should have a BS number for pedestrian or vehicle use. I think the builder just subscribes to the NHBC scheme who rely on council certification. GONE - '07 TD4 GS manual Zermatt Silver

Scotland 2009 Freelander 2 TD4_e HSE Manual Lago Grey

on a modern tiled roof ( post 70's ) the ridge and hip tiles are normally the same tile.

ie hip and ridge refers to the part of the roof, and the same tile ( normally referred to as ridge tile ) is used to finish the line of the roof in both areas.

it is possible the wrong type of ridge tiles have been used,

how do they compare with similar roofs on your neighbour's houses ?

Most ridge tiles are clipped on these days, long gone are the mortar bedded tiles, it would seem your builder was called Jerry Whistle You would not be the first to claim and win a against a council for negligence in inspecting buildings during construction my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Thanks for the idea's, me thinks a trip down the council to see how it was signed off sounds very good idea indeed.
