Just put fob into the slot, and without starting the car a nasty noise like a fan with a bearing gone started. Tracked it down to the component shown, as can be seen on the front of the engine below the hose (the bit with the light grey end).

What is it and does it matter? Car ran OK despite whatever it is making an awful noise.

Further investigation shows it is the throttle body. Appears to be a well known issue
