advice please, whats the view on fitting wheel spacers?, I like the change in appearance but are they safe?

Was thinking of going down the spacer route myself to be able to fit slightly wider tyres ie, 255 55 19 because it's a tyre size available as an all terrain.
So would be interested in the replies myself

Can't speak for the Freelander, but I had spacers fitted to my modified Focus ST225.

Yes, yes I know. My excuse is I was born in Essex.


They were fitted securely to the manufacturer torque with a healthy dollop of thread lock to help me sleep at night.

I had no issues.

However, that was a different car, used for different things. Are they suitable for the Freelander? Others will be better qualified to answer than me......

Essex boy here too. I've fitted spacers like these before on a few Mk1&2 Escorts and Cortinas and 105E Anglia's in my time to increase track width and improve handling but I don't think I'd chance them on something the weight of a Freelander.



I think wheel spacers on a Freelander may put a bit too much load on the wheel bearings unless they are just the thin plate type ones purely to give clearance to the brake calliper, suspension strut etc and not used to increase track width. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

As a point of interest
Wheel spacers are used on later d3s quite a lot with no wheel bearing probs so they can fit bigger 20" Cooper ltz tyres
They need the spacers coz on later models the front suspension is slightly different
