Can't speak for the Freelander, but I had spacers fitted to my modified Focus ST225.

Essex boy here too. I've fitted spacers like these before on a few Mk1&2 Escorts and Cortinas and 105E Anglia's in my time to increase track width and improve handling but I don't think I'd chance them on something the weight of a Freelander.
