Westgate Mall, Nairobi

Just been watching the news again over the terrible massacre in Nairobi

Chatting with the wife we are sure it is the same mall, or atleast the same location as a mall that we went too on our first day in Nairobi when going on safari

We left our hotel first thing in the morning and completely oblivious to the eyes watching us, walked about a mile down the road to a Mall to purchase a alarm clock so we could be up at 3/4/5am for early morning safaris.

We purchased the £2 alarm clock in Kenyan shillings and later worked it out that is cost me £15 Laughing

It's the police officer that collared us upon exiting that makes it stick in my memory as he was shocked we had come alone, even in 1996, he chatted and advised us to head back to the safety of our hotel and walked us all the way back, keeping the locals at bay, maybe it was the pasty white skin, the bulging wallet or the dodgy area, who knows

It's quite a strange feeling even with all these years in between that I have been there and then this happen.

Great place, even on safari were the porters massed outside my door to carry my bags to the safari bus, because later I found I was tipping them over a weeks wage to do so Wink

Anybody else get that strange feeling when they have been to somewhere that something drastic happens, my mum and dad still get chills as they were on the Herald of free enterprise a few days before is capsized, other friend at the twin towers days before the planes hit on 9/11 get similar chills Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I have worked in Jo'burg and Pretoria, hotels with gates all the way round and not allowed out alone, traffic lights with signs that say "hijack zone, do not stop"
Another world, quite beautiful yet very sinister, I was taken into Soweto and seeing very shiny black S class Mercs next to a mud hut complete with satellite dish is kinda weird.

My sister went to New York in 1999 with a friend and they went up the WTC and flew past on helicopter tour. Camcorder footage obtained and she gets chills just thinking about it. It's eerie enough watching it and thinking that just 2 years later they were gone. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

You could say the same thing about a friend or relative who's died, maybe it's something that dissipates with maturity. Laughing

From the TV footage, Nairobi seems to have come on a lot since I was there in '93 - I have to say you were very brave walking around on your own!!

I remember being accosted outside (somewhat incongruously) Woolworths in Nairobi with someone trying to trade an elephants eyeball for the boots I was wearing. I kid you not!!

In terms of "weird feelings", it didn't occur to me at the time, but I worked out shortly after the 9/11 terrorist attacks that I was actually stood on top of the WTC on September 11th, 2000 - precisely one year before the attacks.

Also, I used to live in Taunton, Somerset - the big motorway accident at J25 of the M5 in the fog a year or so ago was a bit spooky. I drove that stretch of motorway almost daily until about 3 months before the accident.....

Although - talking about "coincidences", and in an effort to lighten the tone - I also discovered, whilst living in Taunton (having moved there purely for work from Portsmouth), that my great-great-great-great grandfather lived in the village less than a mile from where I lived in Taunton, and got married in the church I could see from my office window!! I popped out at lunchtime and found his signature in the church records from around 1830.......pure coincidence I moved to Taunton. I had no idea my family were from there....

Although that would explain the webbed feet and lurching walk, I guess......

I find it strange myself, maybe it's empathy for those that die or are effected and due to been there yourself you can associate the place to your visit

My nanna's second husband met my nanna miles away from were I was born and later it was found out whilst chatting that he lived in the same house as one of my female friend in the same town
