Fog

If its foggy you would assume that drivers would put there lights on, I am a little confused why people don't put there lights on??? As seen on the IOS Crossing a few weeks ago, speed and lack of lights was one of the causes of the crash.

Is it pure stupidity or they think there DTRLS are sufficient???

The whole idea of DRL has come unstuck in my opinion, every single morning this week, whether it be fog or rain they drive round with fairy LED's blazing away and absolutely nothing showing to the rear.
It's about time all this nonsense was stopped and common sense and driving skills concentrated on, give it a couple more years and those same idiots will have active braking fitted, no doubt leaving the car to bring itself to a shuddering halt as they simply sit there looking gormless.

With some people it's all about how 'cool' their car looks with DRL's and by turning on their main lights they loose the 'pretty' look so the driver leaves it until last minute come darkness, or fail to use the proper lights in fog. Confused

DRL's in my understanding are 'daylight' only, not inclement weather or periods of darkness at dusk or dawn, I've even seen them in use in the city at night just relying on the street lights to be seen from the rear.

Personally, if you have DRL's fitted, they should be linked to an Ambient light sensor by law, enabling headlights to come on for the benefit of the lazy idiots that can't be bothered to use common sense and flick a switch when it gets dusky.

There are too many Berk's, as described above, who think that DRL's are sufficient in bad weather, (which they aren't), who forget that bu€€er all is showing from the rear until its almost too late! At 50-70 on the Motorway, when you come up behind them in almost invisible silence because they a) cant slow down to a realistic speed or b) switch their damn lights on, (usually Audi drivers), you just sometimes wish that a giant claw could come out of your roof, grab 'em, and toss them to the hard shoulder....well, I know I do anyway! Auto lights are not that responsive in fog. I always put mine back on good old fashioned manual. Until the fog has gone that is.

True Auto lights are pointless in fog, the sensors just don't detect it, I've had four vehicles with auto lights, non have detected fog yet. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

Same here

I honestly beleive anyone in thick fog with no lights should be given 3 points. Its way more dangerous than doing 36 in a 30 and you get points for that. 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE

sensors work on it getting dark, so in fog it normally dull, but not dull enough

I have driven in fog and had to put my shades on as it been really bright, but still pea soup outside

agree though, there is a fine line between no lights and incorrect use of fog lights, whether thats in a a ligght bit of fog or driving in rain... both should result in a talking to from Plod Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I dont know about you guys but my auto lights do not seem to have any logic.... on when light and off when dark at times ( same with the wipers for that matter ).... because of this I use common sense - some thing which I agree with the OP is missing especially with the fairy lights.

Mine seem OK. I like the way they come on if the wipers have been on for a spell. My previous car did that too.

Visibility down to less than 20m yesterday, and I was still seeing cars (just) without headlights on. Main offenders were cars with DTRLS again!!!

I think that cars with daytime running lights are just more obvious than those without, the driver would not have headlights on regardless of whether or not he/she has them on their car.

People driving with no lights in fog or heavy rain have always been around in large numbers same as those who travel entire journeys in the middle lane of motorways oblivious to everything and everyone around them. They are people who are are unaware of anything other than what is in their own heads and their own immediate personal space. They are all ages and both genders and would be most upset if anyone criticised their driving standards!!

On the odd occasion they do remember to switch headlights and fog lights on, once past the fog or rain they invariably forget to switch them off making following them especially at night an uncomfortable experience!

They are a danger to others and should indeed be fined and have points put on their licenses and perhaps made to attend driver safety courses as well in an attempt to change the behaviour.

One thing that could be a factor, is cars where the dash illuminates when the ignition is switched on. Both mum & dad drive Hondas & this happens on them.
