I remember eating my breakfast in Rhode Island, having flown into Boston Logan just 10 hours beforehand. Was watching the morning news as the first plane struck. The rest of the holiday, as you might expect, was a write-off.

RIP to all involved. Foraging near Gaydon....

I am really looking forward to visiting New York next month. I will have a tour around the WTC site, I have always been fascinated with it.

This was one of those events where everyone remembers where they were when they heard the news. I was picking my younger cousins up from junior school as they were coming to our house for tea. I heard various parents talking about it in the yard and then watched the collapse etc on Sky News when I got home Crying or Very sad

I went to Ground Zero when we went to New York on holiday in 2006. Words cannot properly describe how it felt. Very eerie and almost tangible. I physically shuddered whilst stood there. So many innocent people and brave firemen etc lost their lives.

I watched a documentary the other night about a couple of brothers who just happened to be filming the fire crew who caught the first plane crash whilst checking out a gas leak, how they stuck with the chief fire officer whilst they were first on scene, how calm the chief looked knowing the lads were been sent up to fight a fire 80 stories up, carrying everything they needed by the stairs, they said they could do one flight every 60 seconds, they would have been climbing to save lives and fight a fire for a long time, but just got on with it

Brave guys all of them! Including those that spent days searching and searching

Those that visited NY and then Ground Zero, did you go to pay your respects or as a tourist attraction

I never been to NY or America so can't comprehend the local feeling or the events, but find it strange that some people have gone "to see what it's like" it seems a bit morbid from reading people's comments about this over the years

Not saying any one who has said they visited was visiting as if it was a attraction, but curious about reasonings to visit, or is it impossible not to pass the location whilst there? Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

People visit the Normandy beaches, concentration camps and other memorial sites. It's a way of remembering that truly evil acts are possible and, hopefully, to concentrate minds so that they don't recur. It's right down in the Southern Business District, and miles from NYC Centre, so totally avoidable. My plan, during that holiday, was to have lunch at the top of Tower 2. After those events, and seeing the American people grieving so openly, I would have no desire to go there whatsoever. I have never been back since either.

The only small consolation was flying home from Boston Logan 12 days later - it was the safest and most secure way to travel in the world at that point, and the whole 747 had less than 20 passengers on it, so went and slept in 1st Class all the way back to Gatwick. Foraging near Gaydon....

I'm not saying I wouldn't visit GZ myself, but I would to see the finish towers with the memorial area Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

We went to pay our respects npinks. Apart from the odd respectful conversation amongst ourselves, we just viewed in silence. Certainly didn't take photos like some tourists did. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

I visited Ground Zero in 2007. I thought about it beforehand on the basis of whether or not I was treating it as a tourist attraction or to pay respect. I decided to go to pay respect particularly as I had worked for an American firm with offices in the WTC and they lost many people in the tragedy.

I was also sad because as a kid I remember the Twin Towers being built and had always wanted to see them but never did. 2013 RR Evoque Pure Tech
