I remember eating my breakfast in Rhode Island, having flown into Boston Logan just 10 hours beforehand. Was watching the morning news as the first plane struck. The rest of the holiday, as you might expect, was a write-off.

I am really looking forward to visiting New York next month. I will have a tour around the WTC site, I have always been fascinated with it. |

This was one of those events where everyone remembers where they were when they heard the news. I was picking my younger cousins up from junior school as they were coming to our house for tea. I heard various parents talking about it in the yard and then watched the collapse etc on Sky News when I got home

I watched a documentary the other night about a couple of brothers who just happened to be filming the fire crew who caught the first plane crash whilst checking out a gas leak, how they stuck with the chief fire officer whilst they were first on scene, how calm the chief looked knowing the lads were been sent up to fight a fire 80 stories up, carrying everything they needed by the stairs, they said they could do one flight every 60 seconds, they would have been climbing to save lives and fight a fire for a long time, but just got on with it

People visit the Normandy beaches, concentration camps and other memorial sites. It's a way of remembering that truly evil acts are possible and, hopefully, to concentrate minds so that they don't recur. What a wonderfully evocative photo-montage that is at the start of this thread Ours - 2008 Stornoway Grey HSE Auto

It's right down in the Southern Business District, and miles from NYC Centre, so totally avoidable. My plan, during that holiday, was to have lunch at the top of Tower 2. After those events, and seeing the American people grieving so openly, I would have no desire to go there whatsoever. I have never been back since either.

We went to pay our respects npinks. Apart from the odd respectful conversation amongst ourselves, we just viewed in silence. Certainly didn't take photos like some tourists did. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

I visited Ground Zero in 2007. I thought about it beforehand on the basis of whether or not I was treating it as a tourist attraction or to pay respect. I decided to go to pay respect particularly as I had worked for an American firm with offices in the WTC and they lost many people in the tragedy.
