2007 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Zermatt Silver
Rear diff clarity (please)

So, my 2007 manual gs has got the dreaded whine.... And I need to replace the diff. I've read a lot of topics on here and I could do with some clarity on diff compatibility.

So after 2010 a 4th gen diff and haldex was introduce and this is not compatible with my 2007 due to software issues? Or can I use the newer diff with my older haldex? Both or neither?

Is there any difference between auto and manual rear diff's?

The new diff's on eBay, range from £550 to £2500 what is the difference? As the £550 one says it is genuine and will fit any fl2?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Land-Rov...27d379bc63

Thanks in advance

Depending on the Dealer, a low level Diff repair will range from £400 to £600, with that you will get 12 months warranty. There are numerous reports of Haldex failures where Diffs have been rebuilt by Indy's and some Dealers and then failed, after possible incorrect procedures.

All this works out cheaper than a new Diff off eBay then have the cost of fitting it and then the possible Haldex issues. Apparently different bearings are now being used, will you know 100% that the Diff on the bay will have them, or the older ones Question
Least hassle the better, easier on the pocket also IMHO.

True, I could do to know the pre 2010 part number and post 2010 part no. For the rear diff.

On eBay,

The diff at £550 is part no. BH52-4N053-AD and 1793884

The diff at £2500 is part no. BH52-4N053-AD and 1790513

Not that I'm going to pay £2500 for any diff, but it still leaves the question of: will the newer diff work on my 2007?

I fixed my diff by fitting a rebuilt unit from these people:- http://www.hi-range.co.uk/ They use the new bearings and I found it the cheapest way round the problem.

It has been fine since and is silent. It cost £375 and I used my old Gen 3 Haldex to avoid the software hassle. John

new diff from britpart oem

Britpart have manufactured new diff ( http://www.britpart.com/parts/repair-and-s...er/da1216/ )
Complete rear universal diff and carrier. Complete with Haldex unit, flange, pump and control unit.

Note - Haldex unit may be software specific.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Land-Rover-Freelan...mp;vxp=mtr

http://www.island-4x4.co.uk/differential-d...27972.html This website tells: Note - Haldex unit may be software specific so may need new Land Rover software, so is this just it? only software update, no more. so it will fit? =)

ive got mail from one dealer in uk but i cant quite understand that britpart tells that ( The Haldex unit supplied with DA1216 might not be compatible with the vehicle it is being fitted to so the original Haldex unit will have to be fitted. )

what is the point if it is not usable, and you have to use your own haldex =)? please advice me, id like to order this! but wierd this haldex thing, why not just order diff whit out haldex, would be cheaper ?

There was iirc, a thread recently where someone had bought the later Haldex to fit on an older Freelander, iirc it was a no go, the later software couldn't be loaded.

Is there a visible physical difference between Haldex version 3 and version 4?
.
Ie how do we know which version is fitted?
.
My Freelie is 2010MY however there are a number of references on this forum where MY2010 is on the changeover and there are grey areas as to what got fitted on the line.
.
Kind regards from Fred

To warn you gentlemen Britpart in the infamous blue boxes have an appalling reputation on many of the other Land Rover forums
I have personally used Britpart wheel bearings which turn out to be anonymous (pronounced Chinese) manufacture and lasted about ten wheel revolutions.
I would be very wary of buying anything as complicated as a diff from Britpart - tab washers I might buy but not much else.

dpc, thanks for warning. They give 2year guarantee atleast for the differential, + they manufacture bearing kits to diff allso. What i noticed new on theyr diff, there seems to be draining plug bottom of the differential for rear axle oil, which is good thing. Does anybody know is this DA1216 have haldex 3 or 4, and like fredastaire writted, where you can spot / see difference between haldex 3 - and haldex 4

Thanks for all the replies,

In the end I contacted a company I found on the net called ICS, (01372 707088). They offered a recondition diff, rebuilt using genuine LR parts - "inc the part upgrades for all the know faults on the earlier diffs" - with 12 months warranty.

I could have had the post 2010 diff for similar money but they had non on the shelf.

Cost £335. Inc VAT, delivery and collection of my old diff.

They took another payment of £115. which will be refunded when they receive my old diff back.

Been and bought fluids from my dealer: the rear diff fluid £30, haldex fluid 3x £20 and front transmission fluid £16.50

Had a price for fitting the diff and fluid changes on the front trans and haldex for around £150, so fingers crossed the whole job done for sub £600. Just hope the haldex isn't knackered.....
