Nice to see your getting interested in photography. The way I started was with a cheap point and shoot (compact ) camera to see if I really wanted to take photography up as a hobby. Believe it or not it was a 2 MP kodak camera. Nowadays reasonably priced similar cameras have a far higher Pixel count. However even with a "starter" camera you can learn a lot and get good photos. You can learn about composition-lighting -angles and so much more and if you don't like it you havn't spent out too much money. A free and easy way to get an idea of how what and why is all around you, look at posters-adverts- magazines-newspapers -infact everywhere you see a picture. I know you see them every day like most people BUT look again at how the photo was taken -what was used as a background- notice no trees-lamp posts growing out of a head, no unwanted rubbish bins in shot -what height was the photo taken at where was the subject within the photo (rule of thirds). So what I am trying to say is look at a photo don't just " see" it. Take a Freelander photo for example, how many ways can it be photographed? thinking about it and the answer is endless. For example head on -back -side - any more? yes many lets see what about inside- head/tail lights from high up or ground level- still or moving -empty or with people and luggage- hitched up to a caravan- from front/back looking along the body to name just a few. Makes you think doesn't it? AS regards camera make don't just rely on what others say, the most important thing is is the camera comfortable in your hand with main controls easy to get at and use, nothing worse than see a good photo opportunity and missing it because your fumbling about finding the best setting. Consider what your main interest is going to be photographing and concentrate on that, for example wildlife against portraiture, this can influence what camera to buy further down the line, nothing worse than buying a camera and finding out the lenses you have are unsuitable for your chosen subject. Photography is a huge medium to understand and takes years if ever to learn properly, what with constant camera/ lens upgrades -new editing suites etc. I have not even touched on the subject of taking movies which most digital cameras are capable of as that is a completely different and needs to be approached differently to taking stills Photography is like learning to drive it takes time and best done in stages but a great way of bringing back memories Ex 2010 Freelander2 GS-e Diesel manual Silver owner |

In that case i would suggest goingto a wildlife park or/and zoo and study animal behaviour. by this I mean would you rather take a photo of an animal asleep or one that is either eating or playing. Having said that by watching animals it gives an idea of how to get a good shot when doing or even looking a particular thing or even the surroundings they are in as below
And finally a freelander members meeting
The art in wildlife photography is to try and present the animal as if it is in its natural surroundings, which happens to be my main interest Ex 2010 Freelander2 GS-e Diesel manual Silver owner |

When i was at Cotswolds wildlife park I was trying a little to do this, but looking down or through windows is quite hard to achieve as you often get someone in the way or a wall in the background or the animal decides to sleep at the furthers point away from the prying tourist Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis |
