Alarmed by 'smoke' comming from the fuel filler.

My range was down to 40 miles, I stopped to fill up. On removing the filler cap 'smoke' plumed out for a couple of seconds. I prefer to think it was a blue vapour but have never seen this before on any diesel fill up on any vehicle. More emitted as I brimmed the tank. Should I be alarmed?
The engine at idle was running just a little lumpy on tick over but is okay now. Could there have been some water in the fuel tank at low level, heated by the return fuel from the engine? 2012 GS Converted-

Mine always does this, especially after a long run, the diesel is pumped at very high pressure to the engine and returns to the tank, this smoke you are seeing is all part of this pumping and what you are seeing is a diesel vapour, not smoke.
I have had a couple of people say 'your cars smoking' and looking rather alarmed, it's nothing to worry about. Thumbs Up

Thank you Tantastic. I get it now - the fuel is pressurised so this is diesel vapour that must be atomised fuel I guess.
