'iOS in the car' for Land Rover?

Newly announced iOS in the car lists Jaguar as one of the companies Apple is working for integration in 2014 - too much to hope that'd include Land Rover??

"iOS in the Car takes "integration to a whole other level" by letting you access your Maps, messages, and other services without having to take your eyes off the wheel"

Don't worry it's coming to LR as well.

Taztastic: That's why it's potentially exciting: getting siri integrated properly into the car so you don't have to look at the screen for interaction, just for reference and to consume info. For instance, it'll read out your text messages. FL2 2011 SD4 XS in Galway Green

My tomtom reads out my text messages - how cool is that...and so does the inbuilt satnav in my nissan...think it's more down to the phone as much as the ICE. WP8 works well.

LR need to be device agnostic and not get locked into just one limited range of products to support.

I think that they are all heading that way.....Toyota started it with the Yaris/Aygo with full Android integration, and others have followed suit. Just tonight I have received a Press release from Vauxhall about the New Insignia, which has also joined the line-up with full smartphone integration.

It's only a matter of time before all cars will have this, it will be as common as 'Aux in' was 4 years ago. Foraging near Gaydon....

True badger, difference is, all other companies have this to keep on top of the competition....LR will bump the prices by a few grand when they do!!

instead of land rover spending money on develping software they need to concentrate on making the diff and clutches and wheel bearings fit for purpose!!! When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car

someone needs to pioneer a standard for mobile devices talking to in car devices much like how bluetooth can offer a plethora of services to a wide range of devices. That way all car manufactures can adhere to a standard and hopefully the mobile manufactures will follow.

Given the WWDC apple release where they had apple navigation running through the head unit, i think it will starve the car manufacturers from annual updates from users. However on the flip side will implementing the new iOS sharing could be much less than the licensing fees currently being paid to the navigation providers?

As much as I hate to say it BMW are leaps and bounds ahead of Audi and others when it comes to in car integration , I guess they will be the guys to keep an eye on.

Sat Nav is an aid to driving and in some cases reduce stress if that way inclined, other than that I believe all concentration should be used for the sole purpose of driving the car especially on our now over congested roads.

While driving and being able to have access to calls, messages, apps, music etc must be flouting a loophole in the law, it also must be a serious distraction to the driver. Are all these things so important now that you feel that life cannot continue unless you have immediate access to communication Exclamation

My opinion, it is a forward step in technology but a backward step for safe driving, that is until the car can drive itself then we can play till our hearts content.

Thats the way to do it.... interaction with users exisiting smart phones ( ala Mirrorlink ) rather than built in OEM systems.

If I had my way I'd have no sat nav in mine and use my mobile ( oh wait thats what Im planning Wink )

Richardk: yeah my last car read out text messages too. For me it's the quality and reliability of interaction that is the differentiator. Voice control is fine but natural language is where it's at (for me) - and it's getting close to being very reliable.

Bottom line: digital interaction isn't a core competency for car companies, I'd rather they focus on making great cars and let the experts (Apple, Microsoft, Google, Samsung et al.) take care of what they do best. FL2 2011 SD4 XS in Galway Green

EYorkshire: yeah you're spot on. It's all about cognitive load, which is why hands free is not really any better than using a phone.

Funnily enough big piece of research out today on these kinds of interaction in the car. Basic conclusion is that interaction such as dictating a text message or email whilst driving is a real problem

Of course, though, alongside these developments of in car tech we're seeing developments in technology to keep driving safe (lane drift warnings/corrective action, auotmated cyclist avoidance etc.) which potentially will mitigate some of these concerns. And then with self driving cars all this becomes mute... FL2 2011 SD4 XS in Galway Green
