Eco Stop/Start will save fuel each time the engine stops for longer than 3 seconds.

The engine will not automatically stop if:
• The external temperature is below approximately 0°C (32°F).
• The external temperature is above approximately 35°C (95°F).
• Engine has not reached operating temperature.
• Driver’s seat belt is not fastened.
• Driver’s door is not fully closed.
• The driver’s foot is on either the clutch or accelerator pedals.
• Climate control system demand is high.
• Battery charge is low.
• The DPF is regenerating.
• HDC or a Terrain Response special program are selected.

When mine shuts down, I can undo the seatbelt and get out and open the gates hop back in and push the clutch in for it to restart.
The only time it has restarted when I was out of the car was on a hot day and the aircon was on.
But I have not tried to get it to shut down before I unfastened the seatbelt or opened the door.

Not sure if its the same on LR but my old Audi start/stop failed to work after it was in getting some rear damage fixed. Turns out there is a second battery that wasn't connected in the boot.

The key is that it will only stop if the drivers seat belt is fastened. Once it has stopped it will allow you to undo the seatbelt and open the door. I do it frequently when putting mine into the garage.

just picking up on this old post as I've only recently bought a Freelander 2, my stop start doesn't work, but I have the oil service light up - I'm assuming that this might hold it off as well.
