Green lanes are public highways strictly speaking, so unless your policy specifically says otherwise, you should be covered? Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

That was my initial thought too but then I remembered another post about having to get some landowners permissions for certain parts of the proposed route before it could be confirmed which got me to thinking about insurance cover on private land? The way I see it I already pay out enough in insurance & am not looking to pay out any more than I have to but I just wanted to suss out what everyone else does. |

Alright for some! Might need to look at something like this for next year but for for this one I have just swapped the vehicles on our family Aviva Multicar policy. |

If you are going onto private land then your normal vehicle insurance, unless you have set up specific off road cover, is not valid on private land.

Hi npinks check with your LR insurers, as I too was insured with LR between 2010 and last Octobers renewal date. When I looked into the details of the small print in my last renewal documents, I noticed they were no longer offering cover for off road events, whether they were pre-planned or otherwise. Basically they said they were no longer offering cover for any damage that occurred while the vehicle was being used on any other surface other than a normal metalled road surface. That and the 'close to' £800 price they were asking for a years cover made me look elsewhere, for which I'm grateful, as I now pay less than £350 through IAM surety. I could understand the price if there were any prevailing circumstances, but I have a clean licence with no claims, accidents or convictions and I live in a low'ish crime area. |

I have actually claimed for off road damage, but it was a long time ago. Had to rescue someone on Dartmoor and bent the cills and under-engine pan on my FL1. To my surprise the insurance (Commercial Union) paid up and didn't deduct my excess. I was on the moor legally, but definitely off road. If they had quibbled I would have pointed out that I was working (supervising a school party) and they covered me for business use.
