Winter or all terrain tyres

Going to get some new tyres(18") for next winter.Don't know whether to buy all terrain like General grabber or just winter tyres.Anyone got any experience with the two types of tyres. Stornaway grey SE auto with 18" alloys

Stay away from the grabber at's.
They are terrible in the wet, like skating. Not good.
I had them for a few weeks, couldn't wait to get rid of them, lost money but much safer on my
New goodyear ultragrips.

Confused That's not my experience at all and I drive mine in a very "spirited" manner. I have done at least 25k on my 17" GGATs (still going strong) and would happily replace them with the same without hesitation. They have proven hard wearing and I have had no traction or handling problems in the dry/wet or mud. Accepted though that I have not run them through deepest winter as I swap rims when it starts to freeze and run a set of Wintracs - which BTW proved unstoppable in the heavy snow we had a couple of years ago and excellent in freezing conditions each winter. Thumbs Up

My wife's new (to us) FL2 is running 18s and I cannot yet find GGATs in the correct size so when new tyres are needed later this year I think I will fit Wranglers AW or Grabber UHP and run them all year - her's will drive almost exclusively on road (maybe a bit of dirt track) and not do the off-roading mine enjoys. In any case I'm not sure she would appreciate the more agressive tread look of the GGATs Very Happy

I replaced all four corners last week, fitted general grabbers (17") after lots of reading.
Had absolutely no grip problems, not had chance on snow/ice yet.
Noticed a massive increase in tyre noise though on really smooth tarmac where my previous well worn continentals made no noise. Will get used to it or turn the radio up. Smile (GONE) FL2 2008 SE (manual) Santorini Black, the expensive one Sad

I love mine. No problems at all, work, feel, sound and look great. I'd buy them again no problems.

Get a quote on some Avon Ranger Ice. Seemingly endless list of forum nicknames aside, they are superb. Please bear in mind I don't offer this praise lightly or solely from bias (not that anyone else does, just saying). I have actively gone out into heavy snow on ungritted roads and compacted icy snowy roads etc etc as part of my response group work, which most of the forum members have long since been aware of.

Ventured out quite recently to Ashover and the surrounding area and it has never put a foot wrong. Seriously capable tyres and the cost if memory serves me well was about £570 inc fitting.

i ran 2 sets of GG A/T's and found them excellent in all conditions, infact due to the deeper tread i found them better at displacing standing water than the conti's my fl2 came with, and if i cant get BF Goodrich for the shogun i'll be buying Grabber AT's for the third time!

for winter tyres, see if you can get a set if 17s, they are MUCH cheaper, and when driving in deep snow, my 18s pick up snow in the inside of the rim and the car turns into a wobbly jelly party when out of the deep stuff and back on the main road. I need to carry a stick in the boot to poke it all out.

Have been in the tyre business for over 30 years and I am a General tyre dealer, the General AT is our most popular tyre at present with very many happy customers.

The General AT is a great all round tyre and hand on heart have had very few moans re this tyre, in fact we only get very good feedback on them.

Not all tyres suite everyone and there is a big choice of tyres on the market, we are hoping to see the 235/60x18 General AT soon. Thumbs Up Andy.

Just to add my 2p worth, I've got the factory fit Goodyear Wranglers that safely got me everywhere i needed to when we had the large amount of snow.....when I say everywhere I mean deep snow in fields to sort horses, rural runs on fresh snow, un gritted roads to take shopping to the wrinkles.

Would defo have them again, they didn't miss a beat. More than suited to my needs. 2013 FL2 - Black Edition Auto

I went for the ATs and have been very happy with them. I have found that on snow grass and mud the terrain response system has to do much less work than with the goodyears that were standard.

I think a dedicated winter would still be better on ice but I have heard they aren't very good on grass. If you only drive on the road would go winters if you ever drive off road would go winters.

I also put on General Grabber A/T I am very pleased with them in the wet. Haven't really used them in anger on mud or snow but so far I would rate them better than the Wranglers my car came with. BTW I run mine slightly higher pressure and get no noticeable road noise and fuel use is same as previously.

I can't remember pressure at moment Andy at AJS tyres is your man he recommended increasing pressures by about 4psi.
Works for me but check with people more knowledgeable.
