2008 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Stornoway Grey
Fault Code Readers

Hi,

As a heads up, there are a few of the BlackBox FCR fault code readers on eBay for £125 + P&P. (e.g. item eBay Item No. 150601725342)
Normal price is about £250.

They are not for the Freelander 2, but as long as they are for a Landrover product (and have the OBD LD035 lead) they can be reflashed and relicenced for the Freelander 2 for £25 by Blackbox - they just send you a licence file to upload to the unit. Only takes 5 minutes to do.

See http://www.blackbox-solutions.com/FCR/home.htm for more info.

I have just got one and its a useful bit of kit...

Cheers

Darren

There is a diagnostic tool for the DIY person called a "Hawkeye" with dedicated software for landrover so it goes into all the modules and can read and clear codes but also actuate components !
I Think Bearmach used to supply them.

There is nothing to tinker at one's car with these fault code readers (FCRs)...
They just read fault codes, if any, and erase them.
For tinkering purposes, if we're talking about the same manufacturer, there is Faultmate MSV2.
But that is almost £700 ! Shocked
And it locks on car's VIN and you can't use it on other car(s). The FCR also does that.
Taking into consideration that here, at dealer, the labour's cost per hour is about £30, for £700, one can do almost 24 hours of continuous tinkering even with dealers tools... Laughing
For sure you won't tinker that much... Laughing

The Blackbox MSV2 modules for the FL2 are quite limited at the moment; I asked on the support forum if they had a timescale for improving past fault codes, service intervals and basic CCF editing, but it seems development is on hold due to limited man power.

Cheers

FCR fault code reader options for 2013

I hope one of you tech guys can help me
For Jan 2013 please can somebody advise on the best current DIY Fault code reader system to buy for the FL2 2.2
I have laptop and I phone 3GS (somebody says they wil be out of date 'non supported shortly'), and the wife has a 3 month old Android phone.
Ive had Opcom on my laptop for two years for Vauxhall and have been well pleased so a laptop program and interface would be good (I dont have bluetooth on the laptop)
Whats best? laptop or handheld unit or bluetooth and phone app? 2010GS Auto ex Celeb, Santorini Black, 2011 facelift , spoiler, spats, mudflaps, LED footwell lamps, Witter detach,
Other cars:-
1958 & 1959 Austin J40 Pedal Cars under restoration (I make many J40 parts)

I have Opcom too. As I own an Astra H. Used it quite alot. Just bought a plug & play Maxiscan ms509. Works well for deleting and reading codes & showing live data, on my other half's FL2 & my Astra. Shows vins too. No good for prog variant settings, unlike Opcom.
Maxiscan ms509 great for the price, seems robust. No laptop needed, unlike Opcom. Also shows on screen code meanings. You can also store data after unplugging it from cars diagnostic port, has a back up battery. Print off readings later, if req. Landy has now gone.

France 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Manual Narvik Black

I had a Rovacom Lite by BBS for the TD5 and it was excellent. However, BBS have not yet got their head around the FL2 and to my knowledge are still not selling a Faultmate MSV 2 or FCR for the Freelander 2. The locking on to one Vin is a bummer in my view and makes it not really financially viable as Alex says.
There are loads of Code readers out there so take your choice. I have just bought a slightly more expensive than the bog standard reader as I like to have the "Live data" function John

Re: FCR fault code reader options for 2013

Update on my Maxiscan ms509, does not work on an FR2. Reduced engine performance light came on. Used scanner, came up with no fault codes stored. Used Landrover Assist, used scanner came up with two codes stored, as follows:- P0087-22 Fuel rail pressure too low & P0088-27 Fuel rail pressure too high. Problem related to a clogged fuel filter. Replaced filter, all A1 now Laughing
I bought it thinking it would work on most 08 onward cars, obviously not Laughing Does work on my Astra H. Even though I have Opcom for that Laughing Landy has now gone.
