Scotland 2009 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Santorini Black

I've downsized from a 2002 Range Rover HSE with a petrol V8 engine and am quite happy with the feel and quality of my 2009 HSE TD4 Freelander. Just took a wee while to get used to the diesel engine. garioch43

Getting landrover to beleive you that theres a problem in the first place is hard enough to start with. I had a few running battles with them now. Car went in under warranty and came back just the same plus a few extra problems the car never had when it went in lol.ive actually taken the car in and told them how to fix a problem a while back as they said they had not heard of it before. I downloaded repair procedures and parts lists from the very work shop manuals " Topex" and parts from microcat.
There was a few red faces but loved to prove them wrong and I right, felt good.

Thanks everyone for your input.

I'm not trying to quieten it down temporarily. The key to this is that the refinement of the entire engine and drivetrain is definitely considerably less than every other FL2 I've driven - 5 now - and in my opinion the engine and drivetrain aren't operating correctly and efficiently. I believe there's one or more dicky components, and I'm hoping I can put my, or the dealer's finger on the fault and have it sorted. .

Superspark,

I have in the past taken a short subscription to Topix, and used it to good effect at the dealer. They now know I know, and don't BS me as much.

I also found a (bootleg?) FL2 workshop manual on DVD on fleabay, so that's handy. But without the fancy computer stuff, there's no further I can go. The dealer has to have the same suspicion as I have to get a warranty job authorised, and he'll be well cautious unless he can't cure it first time. He can only get paid once for any fault, and they tell me they can also be charged for L-R tech to become involved. .

I had an exhaust resonance but without vibration, it was at 2000 rpm under load (pulling caravan) and went as quick as it came. I fell out with the first dealer because he dismissed it as 'characteristic of the car' without going down the route of a proper investigation.

I then changed to another dealer who tried various things including a new exhaust system and I couldn't praise them enough, and then it finally came to a LR technician visit. He acknowledged the noise but put it down to 'a stack of tolerances' where various components can be towards the limit of their individual tolerance, but together (in my case) added up to an annoying resonance.

I tried 2 other SD4's and one was noticeable but quieter than mine, the other was absent from any noise.

The cure would have been to change many components to bring down the 'stack' which they weren't prepared to do, so a 'servicing' compromise was reached after it being stated as a 'characteristic'.

I now tow my van above or below the 2000 rpm range and am quite use to it now (sounds sporty) Laughing

So basically with something like mine, they can be different and when this 'stack' occurs in a car it can become noticeable in comparison to another.

Its funny that they treat you a little better when you go in armed with some ammo, they dont like it but also know that they cant pull the wool over your eyes.
As soon as they get a wiff that you know what your talking about they soon change their tune. The real sad part of this is that when a car has intermittant problems they know it will cost an arm and a leg at least to try and sort the problem so they are unwilling to spend the money if it might not be a quick fix.
On the other hand when your car is out of warranty they will be more than happy to spend your money until fixed if your prepared to pay.
