United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Manual Santorini Black
TD4 Idle speed

Hello

I have recently purchased an 07 TD4 HSE. was wondering what the idle speed was on this engine. Mine idles at 750RPM but the car buffets alot at this speed and only generally when at a complete standstill. It just doesnt feel right. When cold it seems the idle tries to dip lower than 750 so surges up a little (doesnt happen everytime I stop the car though)

When stoodstill it idles at 750 but a fair amount of vibration is felt in the cabin.

Can anybody advise or have experienced similar ??

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Hello and welcome.

I have exactly the same car as you. The idle speed is indeed about 750. My engine idles with no vibration and thus I think you have a problem. I would fist look at the engine mountings in particular the large stabilising member at the top front end of the engine. Have a look at the rubber bushes and check the condition. See if you can move it significantly by hand without the engine running. Also, have a look at the air filter box. Are the mountings sound or is it moving around and vibrating against the engine? John

750 sounds about right - I've seen 780 +/- 30 quoted, which would make 750 within spec.

Idle speed will vary a little, particularly when cold, as various loads switch on and off - there are a couple of threads elsewhere on here which discuss this - but the vibration doesn't sound normal. Certainly I don't experience any undue vibrations at idle.

Vibration from the engine could have all kinds of causes, from blocked fuel filters to faulty sensors, so a first check might be to see if you can get the diagnostic/error codes read to see if there's anything obvious there.

The specifications are:
Manual: 750 RPM
Automatic: 795 RPM.

Is it an Auto?

If so there is a little intrusion when in Drive and stood still - and when idling in an auto in drive the rev's do drop compared to idling in neutral/park. Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

His profile suggests he has a manual car, mine is an Auto and I agree that there is a little intrusion when in D, sometimes worse than others, i wonder if the electrical load changes this, more so in this weather when seats, window heaters etc are on?

Electrical load certainly changes the rev speed, so does braking. I've not known it change on its own though. If there is something switching on and off (thermostat on one of the electric heating units perhaps) that could explain it.

Idle speed is 750 stationary but 800-850 when rolling. Nothing to do with the handbrake (and its associated light) but detected by ABS sensors detecting wheel rotation Gone... 2013 XS TD4 Manual Firenze Red
