Some cool jobs here!

Love the idea of big ships!

I have spent the last three years building up my own dog behaviour company, and I have to say I am loving it...it's grown strongly year on year which is immensley satisfying. I love helping people, plus I love the dogs so it's a good combination for me.

I would love to know how to stop my mum & dads dog barking at everything thats dog like when they walk past "his" garden. Especially a Japanese Akita that he goes mental at.

He doesn't make a sound when they are away caravaning with him, so it must be something territorial?

But i think your a little bit too far away to help ( they live in Leeds) Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Hi. As with all these types of situations, I would ideally see it for myself to weigh up the dog, owner and circumstances.

I am often surprised at what a profound affect placing a strong lead and collar on the dog can have and to then issue a few short snaps on the lead as you say 'leave it!' just as the dog sets off. Assertive snaps, not aggressive to lift the dog off the floor Smile

Rather blunt way of going about it, but many dogs have not been told in a direct manner before, and will give a rather shocked look when this happens. With a few repititions and setting up a few passing dogs, this can do the job quickly and efficiently.

I assume by your comment re caravan breaks that he is not dog to dog aggressive as such, so this may well do the trick. Other ideas such as a water pistol shot in the face, or a rattle can can help (activate at the point barking starts).
Wait for 10 seconds of quiet, then reward with high grade food and calm praise...be ready to correct if he starts again.

Not unusual for people to say they've tried all that, and so I may go down another road, but try this for now. Consistency and patience will be required.

Also, there are often leadership issues under the surface that ought to be addressed, so a local trainer may well be a good investment. I often travel longer distances as I can do work on pet insurance policies...worth baring in mind for serious issues.

Hope that helps.

1. Probably not, may be, depends, who knows?

2. Commercial helium saturation diving. I'm in charge of their hyperbaric living environments.

Cheers Nick

I will pass on the comment and see what they say, they have tried water pistols, beeping dog collors, ones that spray water and even had is nuts cut off on the vets advice.

I will mention the pet insurance side and they can ask theirs and see what they say. Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Probably means that things are more ingrained then, and a deeper look at the owners leadership skills and general control before we move onto that issue. The use of a clicker can also have a dramatic affect upon behaviour using positive reinforcement. What breed is it npinks?

Most of these situations become much clearer to me when I get there and see it all for myself.

Ok, I'm off to bed.

Cheekily ask your friendly GP for 3 or more per NHS prescription and it works out financially benificial for you.
Or ask for a private prescription and they should cost about £2.50 each (though some chemists have a minimum charge)

As MACLR2 has brought up the subject of trees I will tell you about one of my crops- 25 acres of coppice willow which we harvest every three years to be burnt in Drax power station near Selby.

Actually I wont tell you much as you can read about it here:- http://www.energycrop.co.uk/index.php.

The project has been a bit of a financial disaster as the original willow buying company went into receivership when their brand new purpose built powerstation near Selby failed to work (attempted ultra modern gasification technology).

Drax take our willow and co-fire it with the thousands of tonnes of coal they use. Still It's my bit to save the planet along with the oilseed rape I grow for biodiesel - I just sell the seed not try and turn it into fuel myself.

So taking this onboard do you think Land-rover will refund my £85 CO2 offset charge. I already have to buy carbon offset tonnage to make up for the propane gas I use keeping my chickens warm (who can charge a fellow for keeping little chicks warm that's just heartless!) Although smaller scale commercial boilers are becoming available which may allow me to use my own willow fuel to heat the poultry sheds and maybe steal a bit of that heat to keep me,mrs george and any future georges warm in the farmhouse too.
