When I changed my fuel filter earlier this year, I simply tipped the contents of the old filter into a jam-jar, then used a syringe to inject the whole lot into the new filter, then fitted the new filter to the car and started up no problems. |

best to use fresh fuel as you may be putting some of the contaminates in that the filter had removed. |

best to use the correct prime pump none of this pouring/tipping malarkey , too easy to contaminate the clean side of the filter

I used the funnel and pipe to bottom fill both my replacement fuel filter and the HP pump lines on a replacement engine so all was basically dry. I didn't need any priming bulb to fill the lines, the funnel was high enough to gravity fill all.

Its different because the engine works with a HP fuel pump which needs the lines to be full of diesel. If you try cranking the engine it both wont pull the diesel with any vacuum and risks wrecking the expensive HP fuel pump so there is no point in trying and risking.
