United Kingdom 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 XS Auto Stornoway Grey

Well I have not driven a TD4 auto but I thought 1st gear in the manual version was terrible but it turns out that torque has been limited in 1st in the manual to save the clutch from exploding (slight exaggeration)

I did read a magazine review somewhere that said although the torque is the same in the TD4 and SD4, the SD4 has the torque available from slightly lower down the rev range and that as the revs rise, the TD4 shows its lack of power compared to the SD4.

I must say, the SD4's power is superb and I never sit there wishing I had more to make swifter progress, it is excellent. 60 plate SD4 XS, Stornoway Grey, Arm rest pack

Another significant factor on noise can be tyres. newer tyres can be a lot more supple and absorb the road noise a lot more. This also varies greatly between different brands of tyres.

England 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Baltic Blue

Maximum Torque is 420Nm at 1750 rpm in both TD4 and SD4 and in the TD4 it is the same in both manual and auto versions.

Maximum Power in the TD4 is 150 bhp delivered at 4000 rpm and in the SD4 it is 190 bhp delivered at 3500 rpm.

Having driven both manual and auto versions of the TD4 and and SD4 there is little to choose between them in day to day driving apart from the obvious that an SD4 will get you from 0 - 60 in 8.7 seconds as opposed to 10.5 in a TD4 auto and 10.9 in a TD4 manual. An auto will make life easier when towing and off-road.

At the end of the day it comes down to personal preference and probably cost. A TD4 auto is over 」1000 more than a TD4 manual and an SD4 another 」1000 or so on top.

I'm lucky enough to drive an SD4 auto at work (MY13 from Tuesday) and a manual TD4 at home. Both are great and I enjoy driving them equally.

United Kingdom 2012 Freelander 2 SD4 GS Auto Santorini Black

Hi guy's,

I just joined "the club" having purchased an ex-demo FL2 SD4 GS (Auto) for my wife, it's done 10k and was registered in Oct 2012. I never considered that fuel economy would be a major issue....but it appears to be! Ok, my wifes milegae is 95% in town, the school run, Tesco etc and not normally more than 5 miles so it will not even warm up. But so far we have averaged just 23mpg, even when I purchased it (in Kent) and drove to Edinburgh some 450 miles, I drove very sensibly at around 70mph and only managed 36-37mpg. Is this right or should I get the car checked?

Any help, suggestions would be very welcome.

Thanks
Mike

23 around town, you've made my day, only Nick gets that sort of mpg in a freely, don't feel so bad as I get that from the D4, your 36 37 on a run sounds about right, 40 isn't impossible, you need to caress the accelerator to get decent mpg around town. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

That's about right for town driving Thumbs Up avg 10k per year and mainly town driving and the last 3 years have been 23/24mpg for the year and that takes into account my longer trips at 27mpg motorway chasing BMW in the fast lane or 32mpg with the wife and kids in the car Thumbs Up

2009 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Zermatt Silver

Having driven a few TD4 and SD4's, the best I have driven was an SD4 Sport. The entire configuration from the tyres, suspension and engine gave it a far better overall feel and sound than even my TD4 HSE.

Tyres and rubber seals around doors makes a big difference. However, I once thought my TD4 HSE was quiet but now i'm used to it, I hear every little thing, especially changes in road surface. Whereabouts unknown stop going to follow stream until reach civilisation stop message ends

United Kingdom 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto Baltic Blue

Going right back to the points that I made when I created this thread.

My MY2013 HSE is CONSIDERABLY quieter than my MY2012 HSE. I'm guessing that there must have been some soundproofing refinements made in the cabin when they made this model. Foraging near Gaydon....

United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Manual Tambora Flame

My manual TD4 is 31-32 round town and 36 and a bit mway.... although it could be any thing knowing this silly computer ( keeps resetting ).

I did look at the SD4 but realistically does it make that much difference when driving ? Yes its a tiny bit better on the mway but lets face it its 2 tonne rocket not a sleak sports car so breaking at some speed if say traffic had stopped would mean new trousers for me.

Not only does this mean the TD4 is a bit cheaper to run for me but I've found my self taking the time and enjoyng the car especially the captains seats....

For any one with an older FL2 I would suggest you have a look at my Terraclean thread.... it has defiantly brought mine back to life.

As for the extra noise question by OP.... there are so many factors I doubt you will ever work it out especially as every thing is subjective. Just enjoy the car.... Wink

I guess Arsenal Mike that the mileage done by your wife is pretty low so why worry - of greater concern would be the DPF getting choked up - ensure she gives it a good run on a regular basis. MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

Health Check

What's this 1000 mile health check?
Is this something that comes with all new vehicles or is it a dealership incentive? One Discovery, gone

The 1000 mile health check is just a FOC visual check by the dealer to make sure nothing is loose and nothing is leaking. My wife's XS had it done and took all of 20 minutes! Consequently I never bothered to take my one in as (like most of us on here) I keep a pretty sharp eye on the FL's 'health'.
