Home > Technical > What is the maximum tire size for LR2 with 18 inch rims? |

The tires LR2 come with are 235/60R18. Will any wider tires fit all right? E.g. 255/60R18? And what is the maximum size that can be installed in LR2?

According to this Web-Site, we can go 255/55 18... http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/f...vid=011813 I'm tempted on going with 255/60 18 and might do so this Spring/Summer. My 2008 LR2 http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v511/Mac...098429.pbw |

I am not so sure about 255's. They are about 20mm (close to an inch) wider and to me it does not look like there is enough space for such tires... But if you give them a try, please let me know whether they are OK. I just want to upgrade to a better off-road tire and I am having troubles finding any 235/XXR18 or even 245/XXR18 tires. Mikhail |

I was looking at tires for the 18" rim, but could not find any A/T ones at 235/60R18. Has anyone else found anything more suitable for off-roading? |

I have 18" rims - with GoodYear Wrangler All Weather M+S (mud & snow) tyres - 235/60. They are an all year round tyre - meaning they cater for basically all conditions - so you don't have to change tyres for winter or summer use. Obviously therefore they are a compromise - there are tyres you can fit that enable you to corner faster in the dry and others that have better off-road properties etc etc - but as a general all-round tyre they are the best. I looked at stopping distances in the dry, wet, snow, ice & mud (from independent tests) - and this tyre offered the highest overall score, without any individual category having a relatively poor score. I'm not sure if they are suitable for the off-roading you are contemplating - but I took my FL2 on the Land Rover "off-road" day - and they did fine |

You're right, too close for comfort... I'll also will be upgrading the wheels/rims as well with a lower offset which should bring the tire out a bit. My only concern is... With a 255 tire, would they stick outside the wheel-well? That's something I Would NOT Want. My 2008 LR2 http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v511/Mac...098429.pbw |

What did the terrain look like? Standard tires are fine in dry conditions, on firm snow, or in a bit of mud on a firm surface, but even a little mud on soft surface makes them lose traction. I almost got stuck in a situation with two wheels on wet grass and two wheels in some mud. And I got stuck in soft snow although I was able to plow through about 30 cm of snow on a hard surface without any problem. I could not find any 235/60R18 All-Terrain tires so I am thinking about either trying 255/55R18 or 245/65R17 but in the latter case I would have to also buy new rims and give up Tire Pressure Monitoring System and that is something I would prefer not to do. That link does not work... What tire did you find? I could not find any 245/60R18 on the TireRack. Mikhail |

Not in 235/XXR18 The closest I can see it General Grabber AT2 and Pirelli Scorpion ATR at 255/55R18 but they are 1-1.2 inch wider than 235/60R18. I do not think they will fit OK. Mikhail |

I am thinking about smaller offset too. If it could be changed by -10mm, then 255 tires will for sure fit fine. But it is quite likely the tires will stick outside. And what about tire pressure monitoring system? Can the sensors be moved to the new rims? Mikhail |

It's a typical LR course - with all different types of terrain. Enough to test the car - but not too extreme to damage it. There was plenty of mud - but we were not crossing rivers or rocks / boulders etc |

I was also looking at some wider tyres for the LR2, as I think they would finish its look off as well as improving the on-road grip.

TripleTread is an excellent tire. I have them on my Jeep Liberty and I have no complaints. Fortera on the other hand does not have good ratings for ice traction: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?ti...HL+Edition I personally would not go for it. |
