I'm totally cynical about this. The majority of the price we pay goes to our spendthrift, corrupt politicians. The oil companies are too powerful to bow to any supposed threat and will continue to rip us all off by hiding where their obscene profits really come from. There's no real competition - the price is effectively fixed within regions and artificially upped in rural areas.

It just annoys me when people think that oil companies make huge profits from petrol & diesel.

If you look at the price of petrol on the continent compared to ours, there's not much difference. Diesel is a bit cheaper, but not by as much as it was only a year ago.

What really gets to me about our government is how ruddy inefficient they must be with our money. We pay one of the highest rates of total taxation on the planet, when you add in Income Tax, National Insurance, Fuel Tax, VAT and all the other "hidden" taxes. Where in the world does it all go? Do people with more sensible tax rates than us live so much worse than us because their government doesn't spend so much? Ours - 2008 Stornoway Grey HSE Auto

Get used to it, with population rising through immigration and with schools, hospitals, local gp's and the police unable to cope, the only ones left to foot the bill is those that work. The fuel duty is purely a way to boost the coffers, it has nothing to do with immisions or keeping cars of the road.

If illegal immigrants and their families were returned and social security scroungers dealt with, we could all pay less taxes. It would also solve the housing shortage. |

What they would like is for our wages, and we're only talking about the middle class here, theyre the only ones that do work, to be paid directly into the government account, they we have to apply daily via a bit of form filling for what we need, they would then assess it as to whether we really do need it, then in a months time they might give you a bit.
