Any thoughts on this fuel investigation by OFT?

http://www.whatcar.com/car-news/oft-to-inv...ces/263804

I use Morrisons who are the cheapest in my area. 138.9 last I looked compared to 142.9 at Sainsburys and 144.9 at Shell (whose staff now wear stripey jumpers and carry swag bags).

Lets hope the OFT can do something about this... 60 plate SD4 XS, Stornoway Grey, Arm rest pack

I'm totally cynical about this. The majority of the price we pay goes to our spendthrift, corrupt politicians. The oil companies are too powerful to bow to any supposed threat and will continue to rip us all off by hiding where their obscene profits really come from. There's no real competition - the price is effectively fixed within regions and artificially upped in rural areas.

The bottom line is that we all need fuel and will all, eventually, pay more or less whatever the pumps charge us.

We're the infantry in this, with no power whatsoever. Big Cry Ours - 2008 Stornoway Grey HSE Auto

It just annoys me when people think that oil companies make huge profits from petrol & diesel.
It's our government that steal the money from us with over 70% tax on fuel Exclamation ______________________

I still can't believe that we have to pay VAT on the duty charged on the fuel......?

Yep, fuel duty added then VAT on top of that.

It's strange how fuel in France is a lot cheaper compared to here Confused We were paying 1.34€ per litre which is about £1.12 a litre some 30p a litre cheaper than what we're paying at our local Tesco today Evil or Very Mad ______________________

If you look at the price of petrol on the continent compared to ours, there's not much difference. Diesel is a bit cheaper, but not by as much as it was only a year ago.

I actually think in the next 12 months the government should cut duty on fuel...as the take a percentage, when the price of fuel goes up, revenue from duty and VAT increases.

Another big help would be if the U.S, Russia and China put their prices up, the demand would drop slightly which would mean prices would drop. And with a litre of petrol in America/Russia about 55p, the'yre the greedy ones ruining it for the rest of us Rolling Eyes Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

What really gets to me about our government is how ruddy inefficient they must be with our money. We pay one of the highest rates of total taxation on the planet, when you add in Income Tax, National Insurance, Fuel Tax, VAT and all the other "hidden" taxes. Where in the world does it all go? Do people with more sensible tax rates than us live so much worse than us because their government doesn't spend so much? Ours - 2008 Stornoway Grey HSE Auto

Get used to it, with population rising through immigration and with schools, hospitals, local gp's and the police unable to cope, the only ones left to foot the bill is those that work. The fuel duty is purely a way to boost the coffers, it has nothing to do with immisions or keeping cars of the road.

Simple as;
Income tax kept low to make people feel good when they get paid but in return taxed on everything else.

If illegal immigrants and their families were returned and social security scroungers dealt with, we could all pay less taxes. It would also solve the housing shortage. Crying or Very sad

What they would like is for our wages, and we're only talking about the middle class here, theyre the only ones that do work, to be paid directly into the government account, they we have to apply daily via a bit of form filling for what we need, they would then assess it as to whether we really do need it, then in a months time they might give you a bit.
In the meantime all the other countries carry on as normal and if they hit a sticky patch get on the phone and ask our government for a few bob to which they get the answer, "sure how much do you need, are you sure thats enough" the cheques on its way. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes
