5th service cost and scope of work / fluid changes

Hi,

Not sure whether the mods want to merge this into the existing 5th service thread, but I wanted to throw in a further question too, so I'll leave it to them to decide whether this warrants a new thread!

Our '57 plate FL2 is due for its 5th / 60 months / 75,000 miles service, which I believe is an 'A' service and the car will have 48,000 miles on it by the time it's due. The first three services were carried out by LR dealers and the fourth by a small, local garage near where I used to work (genuine LR parts used though).

I've got a copy of the Maintenance Check Sheet for the FL2 and the first four services carried out have been the correct pattern of A, B, A and B, with the only additional work being the brake fluid change as part of the third service. I've got over 6 litres of the correct oil sat in my garage, so I've tried to get prices for the required 'A' service both with and without the dealer supplying the oil. Here are the quotes so far:-

Listers Land Rover at Droitwich - £343 inc. VAT, with a saving of £81 inc. VAT if I supply the oil
Hereford Land Rover - £384 inc. VAT, with a saving of £97 inc. VAT if I supply the oil (is their oil laced with gold?!)
Bourton Land Rover (independent) - 'around £250' and seemed to think there was little difference between an A and a B service, which didn't inspire much confidence...
Tim Fry Land Rovers (independent) - normal cost of an 'A' service is £220 inc. VAT, (forgot to ask about supplying own oil), but they believe that further work is required for the 5th service (from memory, the service manager thought it was a change of oil in one of the transaxles) and have quoted £300 inc. VAT

And finally, my question... does anybody know what the mysterious additional work is that the 5th service dictates according to Tim Fry Landrovers? Fuel filter and air filter were replaced at the 'B' service last year and my reading of the Maintenance Check Sheet is that nothing out of the ordinary is required at 5 years (appears to be little more than an engine oil and filter change, plus an array of visual checks), but the flexible brake hoses should be replaced at 6 years. No transmission or diff fluids need changing until 150,000 miles or 10 years.

Are Tim Fry erring on the side of caution by changing the fluid in a part that is prone to failure without regular changes, or should I just insist in a basic 'A' service being carried out? I'll try to call them again next week to clarify exactly what it is they are proposing to change.

Incidentally, the Listers quote came with a printout of the scope of the work and apart from the usual load of 'check' and 'inspect' tasks, it's basically a glorified (and very expensive!) engine oil and filter change. Definitely no other fluid changes being proposed.

Any help / advice gratefully received. Cheers

Dunno about the 'extras' but I got a 75k 'A' service done by my local dealer (stratstones) for a very reasonable all in (incl. MOT) for £295 inclusive of VAT. A very good service they provides too!

I had to haggle mind Wink Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints

Mines overdue it's 75K service so I got a quote for the service from a local dealer - £300ish, oh I would like the gearbox oil changed at the same time - that'll be an extra £400ish sir !

Do you mean £300 for the servive and £100 for the oil change - no £700 for the lot, and that doesn't include a gearbox filter change. I was going to ask about the rear diff oil change, but ran away scared.

Prices are ish because I asked over a month ago, and I'm still in shock. Shocked Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

Is it just me or dose anyone else think getting a service every 12 month seems excessive?

My car is also due it 5th ( 60 month ) service and has only done about 7000 miles since it's last service.

Surely a pollen filter or an oil filter for that matter has a service life of more than a year?

A 24 month / 30,000 mile service cycle would suffice, I think we're just paying over the odds to get a stamp on a piece of paper.

In my honest opinion - I think 12 months is about right.

It does depend on what you are after tho. People who own cars from new and may only keep 3 or 4 yrs, condition based servicing is fine - its when cars get older that you realise it has probably done it better to do it more often.

Also - new cars with dpf's may need servicing more as the oil dilutes with fuel due to the regeneration process which can be really bad.

Oh and have you ever looked at a pollen filter... Changed mine after 6months due to 3 young sensitive noses and it was filthy! Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints

Spoke with Tim Fry Land Rovers again yesterday and the service manager checked his chart regarding the extra work required for the 5th year service. Turns out that no extra work is required and after apologising for the confusion, the car is booked in for the service at £220 all in. Loan car is free too, where Stratstone like to relieve you of £10 for th privilege and charge an extra £100 for the same oil change.

There we are then!

A lot can happen in 12 months!

I have a D3 and change the oil at six months between services. Also change the air filter every year too (even tho it supposed to be every 3 IIRC).

I will be doing the FL2 a six month oil change too.

D3 will do ~20k/year FL2 ~12k
