Oil usage

Had a bit of a shock at the weekend when I checked the oil, after 4500 miles the oil level had dropped to a couple of mm above the low mark , this is the first car I have ever owned that uses oil between services , is this normal with the freelander ,

Mine has never yet needed topping up between services, but engines vary. Some need oil, some don't. I'd be inclined to check for signs of oil leaks, but then again new engines can sometimes use oil while bedding in, and yours is a recent model. At my last service the dealer provided a litre of oil for top up purposes, so obviously some people need it (and he gets to sell more oil at inflated prices...)

Mine required a litre before the first service and just over 1/2 - 3/4's of a litre will be needed before the 2nd service in the middle of April.

I know that with the current generation of MINI (with the Peugeot - Citroen - BMW petrol engine) BMW expect it to consume as much as a litre per 1,000 miles Shocked so I think we can count ourselves lucky!

Mind you, if they didn't insist on leaving the original oil in there for 15,000 miles (Land Rover), or 20,000 miles (MINI), then maybe we would be spared the bulk of the oil consumption. I know that the oil in my old 2.5 TD XM's never used to move between 6,000 mile services, even when one reached over 140,000 miles.

Mine dropped down a little before the first 15,000 mile service, but still above the minimum level mark. I would estimate it used 1/2 litre in that time and would be very happy if that was the case in future.

Modern diesel engines are designed to use some oil in the first few thousand miles of use as oil lubricates the engine. It should settle down, certainly after the 1st Service.

My car uses a small amounts of oil between services. Only about 1/2 litre over 6K miles. Some diesels do, as already stated. So long as it's not too much, I don't consider it to be an issue. My Dad's 09MY, with 17K miles on the clock does not use any at all and never has Thumbs Up Gone - TD4 XS Auto, Sumatra Black, Mud flaps and side strips, clear indicators, private plate, privacy glass

Your right I know this but as its my first car that actually has used oil I thought I would ask , I shouldn't have been so alarmed as all the different diesel engines I operate at work all use different amounts , just a shock when I got to buy the oil for myself lol, and Superspark Can safely report no oil leaks, Thumbs Up

1 litre per 1000 miles is acceptable according to LR. Although it's very rare for them to use this much.

Ours used a bit until about 5k and from then on never needed a drop. Thumbs Up Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35
