Real world wading

The floods are here in abundance and we have cars that are more capable to a certain extent than normal cars. Before anyone jumps in, I do not post this thinking myself or anyone else can ignore road closed signs and go wading in all guns blazing not knowing how deep it is. The days of 'Yeah baby' are dead and buried Laughing Thumbs Up

Land Rover state half a metre wading depth. I have heard however that so long as water doesn't reach the air intake near the side indicators, all will be well.

Theory aside though and assuming a road hasn't been closed, do you think the FL2 can cope with deep water that would say reach the top of the wheels?

Also, do you think half a metre of water is more than enough to stop a normal car in its tracks?

Found this which looks impressive but risky:  LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

The alternator will start making a racket and battery light come on at around 400mm. Not advisable driving in any water unless absolutely have too!

We did some deep water at Bala and I still cleaning mud from intercooler radios oil coolers etc, you can't gurantee the doors won't leak either. After all it is a land rover

Good point and useful info Thumbs Up

I did encounter a mini-flood the other day when heading to work. Normal cars did turn around and try a different route but it was abundantly clear when viewing the bollards at the side of the road that it was probably safe for normal cars and a walk in the park for the FL2. I went through and onwards to work without further incident. On certain roads though, especially close to rivers, something sinister could be lurking under the surface that you wouldn't want to hit. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

500 mm is the official wading depth in static water.
Top of the wheel (not top of the tyre) is a good guideline to follow.
It's not just the air intake you need to consider but also the fan, air conditioning motor and electrics/electronics in the engine bay.

In flowing water, you need to take into account that each cubic metre of water pushing against the vehicle weighs a tonne and once you start floating you've got a big problem.

Always worth listening to the voice of experience DrRpb. Thumbs Up

I assume you have encountered some people's unfortunate forays into water? Or perhaps experienced it first hand?

Agreed, flowing water can be very dangerous. That Freelander in Tong Lake couldn't have done it if it was a river with a bit of current. I was on a trip a few months ago and an xtrail went under on a tricky river crossing, nose first into a hole. If you have to do it, walk it first. If you can't walk it or it's knee height or more then find another way. You are asking for pain otherwise.

A wise man is in the living room with a beer on Freel2, while the kids are clearing up in the kitchen.

Wouldn't deliberately go higher than the top of the wheel rim, Had too many scares with the rear floating.

Proper "cleanish" flowing water is kinder to the suspension/brakes/radiators than churned up mudholes on pay and play sites, but flowing water exerts a LOT of force Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

true story. fl2 with sat nav drowns out, towed, engine starts fine, but sat nav under seat gets wet, near £4000 insurance claim, yes its just a dvd drive but its interconnected with the audio etc all has to be replaced, ludicrous money but for some reasons insurance companies never seem to baulk at such nonsense just pay up then inflate premiums.

maybe the owner should never attempted the water (or opened to door to get out, use a window) but its too late for that now. trouble is for us that its a 30+ mile detour everytime the road floods and your not sure if you will find an even deeper flood on the detour.

So unless its a genuine emergency, stop your trip or find a detour, £100s of thousand worth of cars have been towed of just out local road recently due to flood damage, I myself towed a fair few of them with my tractor. At work
At home

He probably shouldn't do it with his car either. Smile It's an expensive dipstick.

Having said that, it's easy to do over here because it's warmer. You would probably freeze your nuts off walking rivers over there? Shocked
