So, 100 years today since the ill fated liner went down. One of the most haunting stories for me was the band staying on deck and playing 'Nearer my god to thee' as she sank.

news item the other day telling of the telegraph operator implied he didn't pass warning messages from other ships to the bridge. As his orders were to concentrate on passenger messages |

I am probably in the minority here but I can't really follow all the activity going on about this. True it is sad the number of deaths involved but what about all the people killed on the roads each year. Can we have a ceremony on the M1 and throw a wreath to join all the rubbish at the side of the road sometime.

Agreed, if we celebrate this why don't we celebrate the "tactics" used in the first world war? In fact WW1 was more efficient at removing people from the planet, millions not thousands and simarly those at the top didn't get in the way of much danger. Ghyllie oo! Totally agree with you, also. Apparently on the first day of the battle of WW1, 35,000 men were killed. Whether that be true or not, I don't know, but it was one hell of a massacre, nonetheless. I think the Titanic marked the end of an era of man thinking her were better than god and practically immortal. Whilst the death toll was insugnificant in comparison with both WW1 & 2, it literally shook the world and had a massive inluence on maritime law thereafter. Albeit, disasters still occur, eg. Costa Concordia (to mention one) ![]() |
