Rear Diff - Whine **ALL HERE**

Hi Everyone

2012 HSE Auto 28 000 miles.

Have noticed whining noise at 20 000 Mi or a bit less (1 year ago) ... thought was the tyres. I've changed them a couple of month ago at 25 000 Mi but the noise is still there ...

My rear diff is to be changed according to LR. Fortunately under warranty ...

it's really disappointing to have this changed at this low mileage. I wonder if I have to change it again in 2 or 3 years.

Disgraceful really that LR obviously haven't done anything about sorting out the drive train design during the production run. Like most manufacturers they spend money on facelifts rather than engineering. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Although I agree with you Dorset, it clearly hasn't hurt them - we've all bought them knowing they could have these problems. It would seem the love for the model outweighs the known issues... FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues
2019 DS. Terribly unreliable.
Sold DS for a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Fingers crossed....
Sold Outlander for a 2014 SD4 SE Tech because I’m mental
Now greatly regret selling the Outlander. MPG of the FL2 is atrocious and so are the fuel bills. Fun though 😎
Couldn’t afford the fuel bills so back to an older Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Significantly better than I remembered it to be…

Not so sure that people buy cars knowing of the potential problem areas, I sometimes talk to FL2 owners in car parks and they seem unaware of the standard problems. Similarly, my wife has a Peugeot 207 which has a number of "well known" faults that people are unaware of. It's as if people only look at the cosmetic appearance of a car when they buy it. I saw an advert last night on TV for a small car and it was all about the fact that it had alloys and bluetooth and was a "cool" car to drive.

I suppose that since a sizeable proportion of the population can't even wire up a mains plug these days we shouldn't be surprised. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Sorry I should have been clearer - this forum is full of people who buy them knowing full well what they are getting themselves into. Everyone I know said "oh, you don't want to buy a Land Rover, they break all the time". I would imagine that is a fairly common thing, yet they still sell very well.

But yes, I laugh when the ads make out a car is cool and has gadgets. I guess that is more important than the car itself for many. I had a Kia Sportage which on paper was an amazing car. Hated it. The tech quickly becomes boring and unused but the car will always drive the same. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

But back on topic - a diff going at 20k sucks. My transfer box went at 36k - really does make you wonder about the quality of those really important bits! FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

They don't need to know how to wire up a plug.......... they are all moulded now so you should never need to change a plug Thud

the same as we now have a number of cars that park themselves, that brake in traffic themselves, that don't need a key of any description, that open the boot just by flicking your foot underneath.................

people buy cars BECAUSE of all the gadgets now but are mostly unable to ''properly'' drive themselves.

LR are a little behind on all this, but even modern LR will now choose the right TR setting with FLIR (forward looking infra red) and park themselves etc etc etc. There is little skill involved in driving a modern LR off road or on road.

The focus is on all this technology and is where the money is spent, while the basic mechanical underpinning of a car (gearbox/clutch/differentials/pistons etc) are all less important.

I fully agree with you.

I was aware of these issues but I thought it was isolated cases and/or LR will fix this during production run ... If I had known that these issues weren't sorted out I would never have bought it ...

I'm curious to know who has a freelander 2 and hasn't or never had problem linked to rear diff and/or transfer box ...

I have had the problem with my previous one (and, yes, bought another!) but a friend of mine has an 09 reg GS with 60000 or so on the clock and no problem whatsoever! They must make some parts properly......by accident? Smile 2011 SD4 HSE Auto

D-Man at what mileage you had problems with your previous one ? was it the rear diff.

do you know how many labour hours is it necessary to change the rear diff ? is it a hard job ?

My dealer says they will keep the car for 1 week since they will remove the faulty rear diff take pics, send them to LR UK and wait for their approval to change it ...

No, sorry, as it was all done under warranty but the dealer diagnosed on the Monday, tried a 'Level 1' repair of bearings, which failed, on Thursday, got warranty authorisation Friday morning and replaced diff, car returned Friday evening! 2011 SD4 HSE Auto
