So we all drive this wonderful vehicle. It really is a great combination of a comfortable on road cruiser and a very capable off roader to boot. My question is who has ventured off road with their pride and joy and what did you think of it?

I'll make the first reply, YES its brilliant but takes ages to clean.


I've been to a number of 'quarry' type events. It's great fun, the vehicle does not get damaged, although it might get quite mucky. Typically looking at 3-4 hours for a good clean up afterwards. Including getting underneath with the pressure washer and even taking the wheels off for a good clean. But, as the saying goes, "it's worth it". The car is so capable its just great to have the opportunity to show off its capability. I've turned up to a couple of events where I know people have looked and thought "Who is the ******* in the '56 reg car" but by the end of the day they've seen the car perform, get dirty, stay in one piece and been quite surprised.

There is no doubt that the car's ability will shine through if you tow or encounter really bad road conditions (rain snow etc) but to challenge the car in the off road environment is very rewarding.

NO but just looking for the right opportunity to go to pismo/oceano sand dunes hopefully this October

YES on some gravel / unpaved road that's all  Do Not Follow Me...You Can't Go Where I Go!!!

It is very difficult to catch in pictures what you experience during a suchlike off-road adventure. With only a few cm. between the rocks and the folded mirror on the one side and another 10 or 15 between the tires and a botomless abyss on the other is in fact quite exciting, especially when on a suchlike road you have to take a sharp corner ...Later we've heart that the track was widened this year with air drills !

Unfortunately, I don't have pictures of the most spectacular tracks. A succession of hairpins on an extremely steep small road, with nothing but holes and rocks made it impossible to stop for a while. We faced the limits of the FL2 engine I can assure you and I'ld better not imagine what would have happened if ever we stopped. Fortunately the road was dry...
So no opportunities to take pictures.
I think I might say that, whether we wanted it or not, we were faced with the limits of the FL2. In certain circumstances I would have preferred to drive a Defender because of it's low gear and ground clearance but in other situations for instance the steep hairpins - I was glad we didn't have the same turning circle of that car.

I had the time of my life overthere and I can assure you the performances of a FL2 are impressive.

We odered leather seats so no thanks.

I was lucky to meet a guy who owns a 4x4 and quad rental business. He mapped out a lot of tracks for us. A few times he let us follow the quads on one of his complicated roadbooks.
However, I had the impression he was always surprised to see me show up again the next day.
My Spanish isn't that good but I understood him quite well when he explained - a few meters further - to a friend that actually we survived one of the tracks he suggested...

Cracking photos Paul, just the thing the Freelander excels at and wasdesigned to do - but they can do MUCH more serious things than that - with out any deep water drownings...............................
