Why has a tyre dealer fitted something other than what you wanted?

Every time I have tyres fitted I tell them what I want Confused

What have they actually fitted Question and do they meet the load ratings on the drivers door pillar?

Maybe its a lease/company car like mine?, they only want to fit the cheapest tyres that are available that will fit the rims and that are in stock and easily available, hence probably full road tyres, they wanted to do this on mine until I told them I had to drive into fields and go down cart tracks and if they put road tyres on and it got stuck they would be getting the bill for recovery, they then put the original spec tyres on Very Happy

I usually find that they stick to the brands that they have a contract with (which are, so far, proper brands such as Pirelli, Goodyear, Michellin and Bridgestone and not any Micky Mouse Chinese makes). However, while they can mess you around with brands, they are usually complete sticklers on the specification being absolutely equivalent to whatever the OEM fitment was,

England 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Baltic Blue

Found a Freelander 2 XS wearing Michelin Latitude Tour today. It was a 08 reg so they are probably not OEM but:

Tour HP
M&S
104 (I think)

Fine, thanks a lot Thumbs Up

I've been to two main dealers today and haven't found a single FL2 fitted with Michelins, so you've given me the final piece of the jigsaw.

Hi Tigger, cannot help with your query but interested to know what mileage and which tyres were worn out. I know you do a high mileage but you have not had the car that long? Glad to be able to help.
As I mentioned earlier I don't think LR normally fit Michelin as OEM on 17 inch wheels. Most of the ones I've seen are Continental followed by Goodyear Wrangler. I suspect the one I saw today were non OEM given that it was an 08 reg.

The car will be 8 months old at the end of February.

The original set of Continentals had worn to between 1.6 an 2.0mm tread depth when they were changed last Friday, at 24,030 miles.

I'm happy with that rate of wear, they've always handled well, have gripped well off road, have been very quiet, with the only downside being a tendency to aquaplane a little too easily on standing water on motorways.

Which I'm now anal enough to know means that you must have proper M+S Pirellis on 18" wheels, rather than the Mickey Mouse road Pirellis on 17" wheels! Rolling Eyes

Tigger the wheel diameter is irrelevant. The problem we all have with tyres is that within the brand the tyre comapanies may also have families using the same names, so for exmple Michelin's Latitude range will have several sub types doing a scale of jobs such as Tour and Cross . When you come to Pirelli the SCORPION family name is used for all car and motorcycle tyres which are vaguely dual purpose so for the cars your dealer fitted Verde, which are are a road biased summer mileage tyre which to be fair will probably be ok for everything if you never go off pavement and we have an easy winter, then in terms of ascending bias towards off road offer Zero ( standard Land Rover fitment) , STR, ATR then the opposite to the Verde a Scorpion Snow and Ice, so lots of choice for them to get wrong !

I empathise, I've had a company car for years and have even had the tyre fitters put the wrong size fronts on my car ( Fronts different size to back on my Beemer) just taken the size off the back tyre when I needed a full set ! 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

2016 Subaru Outback SE 2.0 diesel SE Premium Lineartronic Sold 2024 after 8 years and 80k miles . Best Car I ever owned !

It isn't irrelevant when that manufacturer doesn't make the tyre design that you need in that diameter!

I presume your Lease company is currently using a Pirelli only deal then ? just like Leaseplan had a Bridgestone only policy on our company cars.

I put the Pirelli Scorpion ATR 235/65 R17 108 H XL on the Freelander to suit our individual needs, but it has been a super tyre through the winter, nice and quiet and brilliant off tarmac. 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership
