Battery Charging

I want to charge the battery on my FL2,and have a CETEK charger. Having read the LR Manual it states the the Battery Must be removed. Is this LR being over cautious or is it a MUST. CETEK state that batteries can be charged in situ!!!
regards Barry

I have recently used a CTEK XS7000 (employed mainly for my CG 'bait-box' leisure batteries) on my 07 SE, while still connected. No problems experienced. I didn't go above the 14.7 volt setting. The unit did not take long to switch to absorption charging and then to pulse maintenance. I take this as showing that the LR2 fitted charging system was doing a pretty good job on its own, as the battery is original fit and close to 4 years old.
There is a long thread on battery charging somewhere else on the site, which you might find interesting (try a search on battery charging).

I too picked up a ctek multi xs7000 and use the optional cigarette socket charging lead to charge my FL2 through the permanent live fag socket in the boot.

I can leave the charger in the boot and thread a live feed between the tailgate and weather seal. The other option would be to permanently connect the fly leads to the battery, but my car is on the drive overnight and I don't want that much electrics showing.

Ditto on the Ctek xs7000. It comes with a short semi permanent lead plus croc leads, so I bolted up a set to the battery and routed the cable to the side for easy access. I charge it overnight with the bonnet down (run the 240v extension into the engine bay past the rubber next to the windscreen wipers). With the easy connect now in place it's a 1 minute connect every couple of months or so, bit more often during winter as we are not long distance drivers......and to answer your question yes I charge the battery on the car all locked up. I loop the power extension through the drivers door handle as an 'aid memoir' !

Pondering on one too, I like the fact I could just plug in via the towing electrics if wanted Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Brilliant chargers and definitely the best I've ever used.
I ordered the XS 7000 from Amazon before Christmas for £83 "now almost £93" and received the Multi XS 7000. Love the ability to charge through the fag lighter socket with everything hidden out of sight in the boot, along with the straight forward display telling you exactly whats going on and the condition of the battery Thumbs Up

Never thought I'd be raving about a battery charger, must be getting old Confused

I've got an Optimate, intended for motorbikes cos there's a couple in our garage but it's always revived car batteries and conditioned them whilst connected, although admittedly never used it on the LR.

I think they recommend removing so that any surges don't harm the electrical system, although battery optimisers should be fine Thumbs Up Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

Have used the Lidl £12 smart charger for the caravan battery and also the FL2. Seems to work fine on both. My LR dealer said it was ok to keep battery connected whilst charging. Also heard, can't remember where from, that Ford also say ok to keep battery connected but a good idea to turn the side lights on before switching on charger to help absorb any spikes/surges. Cannot say whether this is good advice or not but sounds reasonable. 2007 TD4 SE Manual

Just ordered a CTEK XS7000 after reading some positive feedback on here about them. I was going to replace the battery but thought I'd give the CTEK a go. Pricey bit of kit, but I found them on eBay for £78.95 delivered as opposed to the £90+ on Amazon etc.
