The wind may well bring lower ambient temperatures, yes as low as -30, the wind itself, however, will have absolutely no effect on the temperature.

Wind chill is perceived not actual, it does not have a chilling effect beyond ambient, if this was the case I would keep your vehicle speed to less than 20 km/h, anything higher would freeze the radiator solid.

Agreed taztastic.

However, I have not spoken about the wind as a single entity which would cause a lowering of the temperature; in my postings I have discussed the cumulative effect of a combination of factors beyond those discussed by the original Poster - those factors being: wind + night + winter. When added together you get a chilling effect. To make or become cold(er) as the OED states.

Unless your engine block is protected to the recommended specification set by LR (to minus 40°C) relying upon a protection level of minus 15°C as originally referenced would be foolhardy in the Alps. And that was the raison d'etre of my original cautionary note.

Survive. Protect your engine block for any alpine climatic contingency, as you would your own body.

I am being pedantic now, it's Monday, nowt ont' telly, I'm bored and this is stimulating the grey matter Whistle

Take the wind out of your equation, it has no effect at all. You quoted an "extreme nightly windchill variation" extreme cold at night will do. Thumbs Up

Anyway, on another note, I believe you are deserting and going for another brand, have you decided which yet?

Thanks all for your input.

I think the LR spec of -40 will be more than adequate.

As far as wind chill is concerned, this will not be a significant factor. Wind chill is caused by removal of latent heat from a wet surface as the water molecules evaporate (moving to a higher energy state - vapour or gas) and in so doing draw energy (in the form of heat) from the surface. That is why when you lick your finger and hold it in the wind it feels colder. Humans and all mammals are susceptible to wind chill because skin is always loosing small amounts of fluid both directly from the cells themselves through the cell walls, and also from sweat glands which are always producing tiny amounts of sweat. My engine block doesn't have any sweat glands (I hope!) and will not be wet. Therefore the latent heat of evaporation will not come into it.

I do agree though that the wind which blows off the top of the mountains is very cold at night. Neverthless, I'll stick with the standard antifreeze!

Looking forward to driving over the Col Du Lautaret with my Wintrac 4 Extremes and snow chains in the boot if needed!

Ps - does anyone else wish there was a ski bag inside the car, coming through the back seat where the central arm folds down, like in an Audi...?

Oooo Ive just come back from the Swiss Alps we had so much snow but it was quite mild in the village.
Our hire car was a ford focus with winter tyres. This is the first time I've ever done any snow driving without
my trusty Mildred or Lloyd. I was incredibly impressed with the way the car handled the serious conditions!
Would love to take Lloyd out! So I'm very jealous you are off out there sufe!
Re the ski issue, I totally agree-wish Lloyd had a ski hatch. Audi also do ski bags I'd quite like a land rover one, but it would probably break?

As of this morning the Col Du Lautaret is covered in snow, a compulsory snow chain order is in place for motor vehicles, heavy vehicles (+26t) are banned. Have fun.

It's Tuesday morning and I'm being pedantic - take the chill out of your response. There is windbag, as well as windcheater, windjammer, windfall etc., but there is no windchill. Just like wind farm or wind chimes it is wind chill.

And no, you cannot take the wind out of a discussion that relates to climatic temperatures. if this was a laboratory experiment you could.

The situation is that the FL2 will remain her Ladyship's "personal private car".

In August her new medical practise will open (we are currently renovating an old spinning mill into a new medical centre) and I had hoped to have LR vehicles as "Doctor's Response Vehicles". However, our experience with the Swiss LR official dealer network to date does not inspire confidence, neither have they (the LR dealers) promptly and without hesitation provided a courtesy vehicle when the FL2 has had a problem. Add to that their very slow response to handling warranty issues and the conclusion reached is that it would be unwise to proceed with LR when an immediate response to a patient call is demanded.

At a distance of 600mtrs from the medical centre is a very small but long established VW/Skoda dealership. He has contracted to supply stand-in vehicles at a moments notice regardless of the reason for the inoperability of the Centre's vehicles. Therefore orders have been placed for Skoda Yeti 2.0 TDI CR170 4x4 for delivery in July.

I trust that this clarifies our position re LR.

Windchill ... Laughing I was saving space, as for the wind, well, we can save that one for over a pint one day Thumbs Up

Looked ast Skoda myself, had an Octavia before the Merc, it was a fantastic car, never a problem with car or dealers. The only reason I came to get a Freelander was the Skoda Superb 4x4 version was at 22+ weeks delivery time!!
Test drove a Yeti and it was very very good, cant really remeber why I didnt go down that route, maybe delivery times again?

Don't forget the winter photo competition, we are struggling here and no one has submitted an entry yet Sad

Taz

just remebered why I didn't go for the Yeti, they didn't have DSG with the 170bhp engine at the time.
