My pride and joy is now approaching it's 3rd birthday and at 17,000 miles I am being offered an extended warranty by LR for one year at about £500.
I have had no issues with her and so what do I do? Accept the warranty, use Daily Telegraph or some other or not have a warranty at all.
What do you recommend ? Ralph

Personally, if its been trouble free up to now, I would put the 500 quid to one side and save it for if ever there is a rainy day.

In my experience, if it aint broke so far, its unlikely too in the next year or two. keep it serviced at LR and if something does fail, you may get some goodwill. If its something completly unsuspecting, or massive, there are now enough parts out there along with indy's who will do you a good deal.

Besides, just because its a LR extended Warranty, does not mean it covers everything Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints

Guys, the replies are very interesting and valuable. Please keep them coming particularly if you have experience of these extended warranties.
My question stems from the fact that my previous car was a C-Class Mercedes and after the guarantee ran out isoon ran up invoices for well over £1000 for nothing really. Ralph

When I got the freelander I also spent £500 on the extended warranty,only after giving them the cash I found out none of the audio/sat nav is covered,The guy who services my landrovers does not know any one who has there monies worth,but at the end of the day its up to you.Had a price from a different company it is more money and no audio cover unless you pay even more but they did offer 20% discount if I payed for it in advance

Mine isn't 3 years old until November but my plan (up to now) is to book it in with my local Independent garage who have been looking after us since moving here (i totally trust them and the owner runs a Discovery of his own).

I'm going to ask them to give it a good going over a few months before the warranty is up and get things done if anything needs doing under warranty and then I don't plan on buying an extended warranty.

It's got a bit more mileage on than your's (29k) but i will only put 5K on probably by then so will only have average miles on.

If it was me and for what I need, I would be daft not to do it, if I sign up with the AA for a years cover it will be £100 or more with no courtesy car, then that only covers me for the UK, so add cover for Europe for a couple of weeks, another £120, where's as if I spend when the time comes £500 with LR, I get the European cover, with a courtesy car, this means I get another years warranty for around £300.

It would seem that the mileage is the main issue and I am coming round to the thought that because my car is low mileage and I haven't had any issues then I wil go with not having the extended warranty.
Annie has more courage than me in that I always have my cars looked after by main dealers as I live in dread of something going wrong and because I had the vehicle looked after by an independent LR wouldn't honour the guarantee. Perhaps I need to find an independent with excellent references to look after the car as I am not at all convinced that the main dealers have the necessary skills to work beyond what the diagnostice tell them. Ralph

Like Annie we also have an independent that is good at his job and somebody we can trust. They are difficult to find but if you can Annie’s way is a good option
