United Kingdom 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Manual Santorini Black

Very nice Razman. Will you post photo's of the lamps once installed?

For anyone else who is looking to do something similar, the inward facing ring of leds can be purchased from Maplins in a strip that is cut to length. Each 'length' is 5 cm, has 3 leds and costs £1.69. The order code is N87CZ. Please don't be tempted to use other colours, it is illegal and will fail your MOT and looks sad.

I have used these led strips for scooter dash lights after the printed circuit corroded and they are pretty bright.

Russ. Poke it, Poke it, make it do it again!!

Hi Russ,
I’m thinking of using these, if they don’t work out I can use them on my other car

I prefer the OEM look that Razman is going for. If you could find somewhere to fit these on a FL2 that looks like they are an original part that would be ok. Still, it's an easier option that wouldn't get you in trouble with using the oven - like I did when painting my motorbike engine and using the oven to bake the paint on. The house smelled for a few hours, oops. Whistle Poke it, Poke it, make it do it again!!

I believe the following is the legal requirements.

Obligatory front position lamps should be fitted at a maximum distance from the side of the vehicle of 400mm, with no minimum separation distance between each lamp. They should also be fitted at a maximum height above the ground of 1500mm or if the structure of the vehicle makes this impracticable, 2100mm. There is no minimum height requirement above the ground.

DRLs do not conform to wattage ratings as they are not conventional filament lamps - LEDs may have to be reclassified at some point but legislation is very slow to catch up in this instance.

As with most accessories and modifications, as long as you are not being a complete numpty and flouting the law, Mr Plod will not bother you - certainly not if you are demonstrating that you are trying to make things safer on the road. E markings are pretty irrelevant as long as the light is suitable for the task and will only be looked at if the light is not doing its intended job or is the wrong colour, dazzling other drivers etc. For example it is the people who have weird fonts / spacings on number plates etc that need to be discouraged - they are seen as trying to hide their identities from speed trap cameras etc and deserved to be pulled.

You will often find that the measurements of light heights & distances are already sorted on modern cars, so my dual purpose conversion is probably perfectly ok - at least I would be surprised to see anything written down that says it is actually illegal. Whistle Cheers,
Raz

That's nice & tastefully done. It looks like an original fitment.

Very nice Martas - there are some direct replacements available on ebay here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/9-LED-DRL-LAND-R...105wt_1313

Using these, you unfortunately lose your fog lights - I live in a rural area and fog is a regular hazard this time of year. My solution is super bright during the day, using around 40 LEDs, but still retains the fog lights too.

Hi,
Do you know what is involved in fitting these? is it difficult?

Also how are they wired so they come on automatically?

I'm a beginner so need it explained long-hand, thanks!
