Air locker

I was wondering if an air locker can be fitted to a Freelander 2. I know ARB don't make one. I also looked at Detroit locker but they only specify the type of axle it can be mounted on and I have no ideea what the Freelander 2 axle is Smile.

Did anyone study this? Is it posiible? Would it require major modifications to the vehicle?

By axle they refer to rigid axles like on Defender, Patrol, Wrangler, etc...
I didn't see until now a locker on independent suspension...
Not to mention that the effort on the Haldex and those finger thick halfshafts from the rear axle will be too big in the case of a locked rear differential... Just my 2 cents...

PS: Did Oresti startled you when he said that FL2 won't cope because it has no lockers?? Laughing
Don't get me wrong but for serious off-roading you should bought another Patrol...

A bit, yes Smile

Well, maybe. I am not dissatisfied with the LR2 and I believe it can do some good offroading. Actually, I am thinking more on expeditions than the kind of hard one-day offroad.

Thanks Alex for the explanation! I sensed the answer to my question would be a "no", no I also understand the reason Wink.

France 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Manual Narvik Black

I doubt if anyone will ever do a locker for the FL2...which is a shame. I am a big fan of lockers and had them in my Defender for years. You may say the Freelander doesn't need them because of the Terrain Response System and this is an understandable response. However, the ETC systems on modern Land Rovers works by detecting which wheel is spinning and braking that wheel (in crude terms). A locker works by making sure all wheels are driven all the time and hence are a bit more positive. My experience has also shown me that lockers save halfshafts rather than breaking them. The most common cause of halfshalft breakages I have witnessed has been shock loading, that is when the wheel loses grip, spins with the diff action and then suddenly gets grip. The diff action is spinning the wheel madly, the tyre gets grip and stops suddenly....something has to give and it is very often the halfshaft.

I am no expert on the Haldex but my understanding is it controls the split of power front/back. As such it would be pre-diff at the back and unlikely to be adversely affected by a locker.

However, like I said, I guess nobody will make a locker for it so I will....well...stop pontificating and go back to sleep Smile John
