thanks for the response. rattling noise has stopped but so has that normal long beeping sound you normally get when you first turn the engine off. so I now suspect the gears have completely worn. am surprised it has had no effect on how the car performs.

anyway, will find out tomorrow when it gets replaced. i'll ask for the old part and if I can remember how, will post photos

Confirmed. Nylon gears shredded. Won't bother with photo as it looks exactly like Landy19840's photo.

Am still perplexed why the car continued to function normally and I'd even considered if it was actually worth replacing as the grating noise which prompted me to investigate had ceased.

Has anyone any idea what this part's function is and what improvement I should notice now it's been replaced?

New part on order, but it doesn't seem to affect performance, other than a little engine run-on after shutdown. Steve

The Freelander diesel throttle body talked about here opens or shuts, thats it, it allows air in only, its not a carburettor. The diesel fuel is via the injectors and controlled by the accelerator pedal via the ECU.
The post above has now't to do with the topic, unless of course you have a petrol Freelander, but then you won't have a throttle body that's being discussed here.

I am starting to wonder to just change mine when I can, it also seems alittle lumpy ( more like a wobble on shut down sometimes ) For the money its on my list of things to change to future proof her Thumbs Up Freelander 57 plate XS Blue Auto

in my first post, I'd said that I hadn't noticed any performance issues. but took the car out this morning and it's like a new car! what's really annoying is that it is obvious that this unit failed about 3 years ago. I noticed it when pulling out of junctions when I was getting out into small gaps and had to accelerate quickly. The acceleration just flats out. I brought it up at one of my services and was told that there's a safety feature that limits the revs (which I actually believe is true). So I adapted my driving style by accelerating much slower and changing up earlier....

However, I still noticed it when starting off in first gear and immediately up a steep hill, having to change up to 2nd gear earlier meant the car just struggled briefly when it goes into 2nd gear but again, I thought this must be normal. But this morning, I kept my foot down longer in first gear and I went flying up the hill. Believe or not, it felt like I was driving a sports car having got so used to accelerating sedately for all these years....

The down side to this, is that I should have had this replaced under warranty by LR 3 years ago (I might see if I've still got the list of things to look out for which I do when it goes in for servicing) plus another down side is that I'm now expecting this to happen ever two years as that's how long the previous one lasted!!!

In summary, the gears having shredded meant the flap didn't open fully so the amount of air getting in was being restricted

Seems to be the problem I also have. It will probably take a bit of time to get the parts from the UK, do you think there would be any harm to still drive while the car is like this? I have no engine warnings - just the rattle on shutdown and while driving (can only be heard with the windows down at low speed.

It'll be fine. I used my FL for a couple of weeks and 3/400 miles after I had bought (but not got round to fitting) my new throttle body. I even took it away with me on holiday in case it let me down while away!
