Beside the discussionable fuel savings, what about the wear of the starting motor ? Next, the wear of an engine is the highest when starting up as there is no oil pressure...

Just imagine waiting at a busy junction, then a gap appears in the traffic, you try to pull out quickly but realise that the engine has stopped |

Starting any petrol or diesel fuelled engine from standstill is the greatest wear factor. The more times the engine is stopped and started again, the more the wear on bearings, piston rings and liners. QED. |

I wonder why it isn't available on the automatic versions which have higher emissions and fuel consumption in the first place. How can carbon have a footprint, it has no feet?

Sounds similar to 3 series BMWs - colleague of mine has a new 320d saloon. The BMW system works like this, if the car has been travelling for a while >20 mph then stops, the driver must select a neutral gear and then applies the hand break only then will the engine cut out. The car then waits for the clutch to be depressed at which point it starts the engine again. Been in his and this was the behaviour when we drove around Oxford. It only works if the hand break is engaged, so sat in slow traffic had no effect or at a junction. If you ask me its a way the auto industry can make the MPG and emmisions look good - under ideal driving conditions! |

I guess they may have tackled this aspect but what about on those hot summer days when you really do not want to be sat under the sun with no airco due to the engine not running!!!

I think i heard them say on the video that the air con will work with the engine running as normal and the start stop system will only kick in once the car reaches the correct tempreture. Though in Dubai i think you have it on maximum cold setting all the time, so I presume the start stop system would never be used. |
