Hi all

When I am starting the truck in the morning or after it has been sat at work all day It seems to not rev up and stay there, but seems to revs up then back down again like its struggling to hold its revs on tick over, a few times like this morning there was aload of smoke that puffed down the road on start up, which is odd as yesterday we drove 50 miles on the motorway then parked up at home so it should not be clogged up

Oddly as soon as you drive 20 yards then stop its all fine, sits ticking over perfectly, bit miffed as to why its doing it? Maybe just some bad fuel?

Its a 57 xs auto

Surely not a glow plug in summer - even an English summer! I'd be inclined to suspect an injector problem. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

Cheers for the reply guys, it was ment to have had a full service when i got it, maybe they didnt bother changing the plugs.

It fires up just fine but like said the revs rise and fall like its wanting to be reved. It never use todo this it was always fine but over the last few weeks from having it back after the diff was fixed now its having this starting thing

Its odd that its only on start up, i can drive for alittle bit then turn off the motor and restart and it ticks over fine.

Glow plugs are not as easy to change as spark plugs and won't be changed at service normally.

No its a 2.2, but was adviced a large full everything done service had just been done upon sale, not overly sure if that would of including them or not

Starting to wonder if its a leaky injector, should it be a easy thing to see, never taken the plastic engine tray off before

Glow plugs are not a service item. Massive job to do on this engine and few people bother. If this occurred in winter, and if the smoke was blue or white, I'd go for them. But in summer they probably don't even switch on.
Knowing the colour of the smoke would help. I'm inclined to think there's a fuelling problem at cold start. This could be software based, or could be an injector problem, or could be a fuel delivery problem, like a very slight leak which would cure itself once the engine has run for a while. Worst scenario would be a head gasket or cracked head, allowing a cylinder to fill with water as the engine cools overnight.
I think the only answer is to get it into a dealer and get the codes read. if recently bought, demand an investigation under the warranty. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

The glows come on always after engine start to make the engine more "greenish".
Only below a certain temperature they come on before cranking, but always after starting, for a period of time.

Its an odd one, as it dose not always smoke on start up, like today no smoke but dose not seem to tick over right on a cold start

The truck is still under warranty, its been back for problems. Aircon failing. Rear Diff bearings. Now a seemingly duff injector

I have used some injector cleaner, with the last few tanks of fuel, maybe that could of moved some junk into an injector? Which might be keeping it open on shut down and maybe leaking alittle. Might explain why once under running pressure it runs fine?

Trying to take it back to the dealer again is just going to be a pain in the arse as it was like trying to get blood out of a stone with the rear diff problem ( its not a landrover dealer ship )

If it was an injector at fault would it show up on fault codes?

Not sure if its relevant, but years ago I experienced a similar starting problem on a Vauxhall Cavalier.....transpired that it was a dodgy cold start sensor. How that equates on an engine 20 years on is anyones guess, but I daresay that there is still something similar in situ on todays modern engine block. Worth exploring in any event..... Foraging near Gaydon....
