There is likely an in-line signal amplifier between the antenna and the head unit. If your new head unit is not sending power down the antenna cable, it won't be boosting the signal.

Did you fit the spring clips which hold the mudflap to the wheel arch?

If you omitted these, the constant flexing will have caused the rubber to tear at the screw points.
 Has anyone tried these carpets?
