I had the same with General Grabber UHPs when worn to approx 4mm - very intrusive whine I was convinced was a wheel bearing.

Four new Grabber GTs and the noise disappeared.

Averaging just over 36mpg over approx 9k miles, 75% motorway rest in town. 2009 GS manual. Decided I'd be pleased with anything over 35mpg when I got it!
