Fuel Consumption

My Freelander 2 TD4 is now a month old. Fuel consumption is nowhere close to that claimed on the Landrover website - I'm getting around 29mpg around town and low 40s out of town. I consider myself an economical driver. Is this level of consumption normal and will it improve with use?

Not sure what you expect from a Freelander that comes in just under 2 ton but low 40's out of town is very acceptable. Trying to achieve makers claims is nigh on impossible for any car, you are driving in the real world and they in the test lab .

A month old means very little, engines loosen up with mileage not age.
I agree with the EY, low 40's for a two ton 4x4 is very respectable.

I currently drive a Merc C 200 cdi, on the same journey I can get between 20 and 54 mpg depending on road conditions and whether I believe this is my last day on earth, manufacturers claims, of course, can be achieved, but typically vehicles will always fall short.

Give it a little more time and look at your own driving style too, it's surprsiing how a little change can make a big difference.

Thanks for the feedback. My last two vehicles have been VW Passats. Perhaps VW are more honest with their claims - in both cases I averaged the overall mpg claimed by VW.

I have a 2011 Freelander 2 Sport LE 190 BHP. it is 7 weeks old I get approx 32 to gallon on a run. and less in town.So I think you are getting good milage if you are getting near 40.

Arround town I also get low 30s and 45 ish on a long run which considering the car is not bad, not bad at all.
You have got to ask yourself why you want a landrover, is it because its bigger that the average car, you like the off road ability and in winter getting arround when others are spinning all over the place.
For these extras you would have to expect a higher fuel consumption. Theres always gonna be a comprimise. I think its worth it.

Mileage

Hi Surespark. I am sure my mileage will increase as the vehicle runs in. The middle section of my front spoiler fell off this morning whilst I was travelling on the motorway maybe this will decrease the weight of my vehicle and I can squeeze another mpg out of it. ha ha Very Happy

It is or was marketted as the Most Ecconomical Landrover ever produced & that is one of the reasons I bought mine. All I can say is the others must be bloody awfull!!

Your lucky to get low 40's out of town, the best I ever had & that was only for at best 10 miles was 40.2. (Past) Freelander 2 HSE 2010 MY In Rimini Red.

My 2007 TD4SE gets between 35 and 38mpg on average per tank
Currently got a poverty spec eD4 (2wd - urg!) as mine is in Stratstones (AGAIN!!!) and on the 37mile motorway commute to work this moring, got 52mpg!!! Very impressive. Car feels wierd being a 2wd though.
Would never buy a 2wd Land Rover - totally against the reasons I love the brand. Or should I say loveD. Had the car 6/12 and been in the dealers at lease once a month since I got it. They are nice people, but if I need to put up with this, I can see me ditching LR for a normal car (just updated my LRO and LRM subscriptions too) As a man thinketh, in his heart so is he

As compared with the BMW 320d Touring I had before, my FL2's consumption is about 4 mpg more (same driving mix). 34mpg versus 38mpg. Considering the greater weight, rolling resistance, frontal area and 4WD drivetrain losses, I don't think that's bad. And it has several things that the BMW is deficient in (much more comfortable suspension, off-road/snow ability, etc).

At the end of the day you pays your money and takes your choice. And the real-world fuel consumption on any car is never likely to match the 'official' figures. Brian

Dougie,

Going off topic a bit, but can you give a summary of your 143k miles in terms of reliability and costs? Are you still on the original clutch / DMF (!) or is yours an auto?

What costs have you incurred over and above routine servicing? Can't recall the exact mileage/age, but there seems to be a very expensive service somewhere around the 100k / 150k miles mark, involving cambelt, new oil in gearbox and transaxle etc. Have you been through this pain?!

Cheers
