I was also under the impression that the engine mapping was one standard to allow for the different fuel grades in different countries, and that we in the UK and other countries can take advantage of the better quality fuel by having a re-map.
If different global markets had different mapping that would mean we could theoretically not drive outside of the UK and certain countries without damaging our engines, therefore all must be mapped for the worst case fuel scenario.
