I had a Orange P7 with a Rohloff , top piece of kit, anybody that is interested should check out the Rohloff website. http://www.rohloff.de/en/products/speedhub/ A friend has just picked up a Complete Van Nicolas Pioneer of Ebay for under £2000 http://vannicholas.com/Touring%20Cross/5/allbikes.aspx[/quote] What if there were no hypothetical situations? |

I saw the Van nic, but it had in internal mech with cable routing on the chainstay and i have heard of problems with the internal cable breaking and being stuck with no gear adjustment. Still a top bike for £2000. |

One of the problems with belt drive is if you get any mud on the toothed side of the belt it cant escape in the same way that mud can be squished through a chain and so it either pops the belt off or it damages the frame because the sprocket/cog distance is fixed, and by adding mud to the belt you increase belt tension. these belts are not stretchable carbon fibred jobby.
